Ride outside the box!

Well, blocking position doesn't mean that you wanna physically block someone from merging into your lane. The question is more about:
- being more visible
- have extra space for maneuver

Situational awareness, and allowing context to dictate your actions, are both critical skills to have when riding, in my opinion.
Wow. That just about ends most discussions as , imho, it's bang on. The issues for discussion should be the "rules" to give you the best chance of surviving long enough to gain experience and situational awareness. And, usually in my case, it comes back to the woeful driver education and standards required in Canada to get a drivers licence. Most of what's discussed here doesn't even get discussed in Europe because firstly you have to be an experienced and decently skilled rider to be in charge of anything bigger than a hairdryer on wheels and secondly becasue the other vehicles you share the road with are also, in general, piloted by a higher skilled set of drivers with better awareness of other road users.

All I would say to the OP is that there are laws, there are rules and there are guidelines. Laws, when it comes to using the roads, very rarely keep you alive. Rules and guidelines do help you survive. So focus on your Drivers/Riders handbook and learn to use discretion based on experience. And don't forget, every time you ride you could be learning something.
