Ride down to Pennsylvania

Thanks for the advice MacDoc. I'm planning a 2 night trip.

Is the wildlife really a problem at dusk and dawn? I regularly head up north at 4-5am as like to be on the road while the sunrises and although I do see a bit more wildlife, it never posed as a hazard.

Can anyone recommend good campgrounds in this area?

Yes wildlife is an issue at dawn or dusk. I have almost been taken out by a massive deer even at 10am on the 144, so be alert. Other riders I've been with have hit deer at mid day, so at all times be aware.

Check out camping at Kettle Creek - it's on a beautiful road and the location is really scenic.
Or Hyner State Park: HYNER RUN STATE PARK, PA

General PA state parks: Campgrounds and Camping Reservations - Pennsylvania State Parks

Riding the QEW to the border or back is fine but the deer are abundant S of that. Even on the 4 lane go S towards Ellicotville I've seen deer in the daytime. They are always there but harder to see in dim light and more active.
We call it roo oclock here as kangaroos and wallabies present a similar problem riding at those times.
I've come close with deer a few times but never a collision in 56 years of riding.....a few trips coming from further south I've ended arriving at the border after dark and a tired and nervous rider til cleared.
I'd say dawn is less risky time and I loved getting out early - hitting the border at 6 am on a June day is a treat.
Sometimes chilly as you go through ski country but there is a convenient Timmies with a fire pit to warm up at just north of Ellicottville and about 2 hours riding time. Border less busy early too.
At that point you are only an hour and a bit from Coudersport and heavenly riding. ( 44/144 ).
Just be careful with speeding at all in New York but PA is no problem to be spirited with no fear of a ticket coming home to Toronto....and really I've never had an issue with PA cops.

Off to chase cassowaries at Etty Bay ...first clear riding days in waaaaay too long.

Well I still got a bit wet, it was chilly (for here ) and windy on the beach at Etty Bay but some were out swimming.
Gave up on the cassowaries....put the big cameras in the top case and of course on the way out.
Gorgeous adult cassowary - deserved a better pic but it was starting to rain.

Other than a bit of sprinkles the ride home was okay. Thanks
These are wild birds and getting rare now in Australia. :(

I hear those are nasty birds with feet that can slice you open.

Was a bit strange, when I was south last july, on the blistering hot days, they were nowhere to found for a week...on the one pleasant day when the temps werent boiling, saw 5 in the same day in PA....although none in the other states

For anyone planning a trip down south next week...potential for strike / work to rule next week at the borders.

Prepare and keep an ear out prior to your trips.
