Registering motorcycle

Hey guys, so its been a while and I recently picked up a ninja 250r and I plan on just storing it over the winter in my garage.
I need to register it within 6 days and I will be doing that soon.

BUT I have a question, I do not have a safety for the bike, and no insurance for it since the season is over.
When I register is , from what I researched, my best bet would be to register it as unfit?

Or what is required to get a temp plate for the bike? My main concern is insurance because I dont have a policy at the moment or anything for the bike. Can I use my car's policy instead? The company has no clue about the bike though , I'm pretty sure this wont work... but hey its worth a shot if it could. It will save me a bit of time when I gotta get a safety in the future since I will have to transport it.

thanks!

If you want to transfer the bike under your name without a safety, you can do so immediately. It will be unfit, unplated.
If you want to get a temp. permit, you would have to have valid motorcycle insurance, your car insurance will not cover you if something bad happens while you're riding.

For safety, you can always call Ted @ Rosey Toes and he will come to your house and certify it for you on the spot.
You don't have to worry about transporting it anywhere.

I am in the same situation. I registered my bike but am not insuring it until next winter (cause my license hasn't matured to 1 year). I am planning to call Ted @ Rosey Toes but later on (maybe in feb) to get the bike safetied/insured as from what I remember the safety cert only lasts for 36 days or something.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!

Do you guys know what happens if you do not register the bike within the 6 days? I have a few midterms this week and probably won't have time toget this done until next week.

Also... I may transfer the ownership to my father in the spring depending on how osap goes, when transferring I would need a new safety right? If so it would make more sense to possible do it then than now .

What you could do it transfer it before the 6 days is over an a unfit and unplated motorcycle. Then when you get the the time you can go and present the safety to MTO and have them change it into a Fit and Unplated motorcycle.. Then plate it when you have the insurance money and would like too.

For you this appears to be the easiest route.

Your can transfer the bike under your dad's name, but you won't be able to ride it or insure it.
Unless of course he has his m1/m2/m license...

Hmmm I didn't know Fit was a title. Maybe I'll consider doing the safety before winter :D

But I guess it does save me a trip to get the safety and plates at the same time.

Yeah that sound's about right, my original plan was to register it as unfit.

I was thinking of just getting the safety cert. and get it registered as fit but it would just be too much work to get insurance especially around this time, ... unless they allow you to buy it for a month but I highly doubt that.

I'm also wondering about this...

and is it 6 days from the date on the bill of sale?

Don't worry, it will be very rare that you get in trouble for not registering within 6 days. I did not register my bike for at least 2-3 months, nobody even raised an eyebrow. However, you may want to look into getting fire/theft insurance over the winter, depending on where you live. Nothing sucks more than having an unregistered bike you just bought stolen...

Using the word "title" in reference to if a motorcycle is fit or unfit may not be the correct term but it was easiest to explain and figured I'd go with that route to help show you a few choices.

You don't need insurance, to register as fit. You only need it to get your licence plate and/or sticker

I bought a bike last fall with a safety and went in to Service Ontario. They transferred ownership to me as a "fit" bike, but didn't issue me a plate. In the spring I took the Insurance certificate in and they issued me the plate and updated the registration/ownership documentation. Easy Peasy

You had a safety with you right?
Damn i wish I went this route.

Alright so I got the bike all registered , paid taxes and got me a temporary sticker.
Got insurance from now until renewal (february) with TD.

What I wish I knew was , its an off-season and they only charged me $50 bucks until febrarury!!!
I wish i knew this LAST WEEK when I spent all week cleaning and admiring the bike, I couldve been riding it in the decent weather we had ... now its just cold. But I still took it for a spin.

I went on a nice 50 km cruise around town, but I have one problem ... how exactly are you suppose to sit on the a bike. I Would assume with your back straight with a bit of a arch? Ive tried various positions but the back sorta hurts. Maybe i need to get used to it. Along with the wrists, but i believe the wrists is normal? or am I putting too much weight on them.

Building up your core strength will help with the back pain you're experiencing right now. As well, activating your core while riding is evidenced by less pressure on the wrists. This means you're arms are more free and relaxed, which is the technique you want to employ while riding. Watch this clip to get an idea of what I mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlfN9Z6IlI0

"Do you guys know what happens if you do not register the bike within the 6 days?"

Absolutely nothing happens. You can register whenever you feel like. 2 weeks or 2 years later. Speaking from experience.
Some people never even register and sell their vehicles under the previous person's ownership.

I think the six days is more an MTO or HTA requirement, as they want to know who owns what by keeping the system up to date. If you don't register it within the six days, and someone steals it, technically there is no record (yeah you have a bill of sale) in the system, so the recovered bike would go back to the previous owner. I know a lot of people are lazy about this, but the six day limit is there to protect you, and the liability lies with the seller as well a the buyer. That's why dealerships always make the changes for you. If you don't have time to register it, how are you going to find time to ride it?

There's always the worst scenario for everything. Technically, why wait 6 days even? The bike could get stolen next hour! Run to MTO!
Like I said, some people NEVER register bikes so they don't have to pay taxes. They buy and sell for profit.

From what OP is asking, he's got nothing to worry about. Time is a luxury many of us don't have. When he will be riding his bike is his problem.
