Recommendations for a good cruiser/tourer

Sorry, you must have me confused with someone who can't show up to his own motorcycle meets because he owns a cottage that he has to go to...
Hah.

Dad owns the cottage, I have zero decisions on when I get to go 🤷🏻‍♂️

Triumph Thunderbird is a nice all rounder.

I would suggest the best selling cruiser brand which all other brand's cruisers try to copy but that would set off a minimum 10 page argument.

That V-Star is a great basic cruiser. What are you looking to improve? More comfort? More Power? Newer tech? reliability issues starting?

I would actually agree with this.
Im not into cruisers, but if you're into that sort of thing, why not just get the original?

Budget probably.

How new is the preference

From your description of the areas you like to ride, your need for some comfort and some weather protection I think you should consider a used BMW R1200/1250 RT at the newest level your budget will allow. Obviously, I'm biased but I have 60 years of riding experience and regularly ride from the GTA to all areas north and east to Ottawa and 2-3 day trips to the US in better times. I can't imagine anything that covers all the bases for me than what I have.

the only cruisers I've ridden were harleys, but I imagine they dont sound or feel like japanese cruisers(could be wrong)
Just like every aprilia ive ever heard doesnt sound or feel like any other japanese bike, or the MT 10 doesnt sound or feel like the rest of the inline 4's

Disclaimer, I am not a cruiser rider ... I don't "get" cruisers. From how I see it, anything a cruiser-style bike can do, can be done better by something else ... with the possible exception of if someone is demanding of an extremely low seat height.

Original poster wants "reliable, powerful and comfortable. Im not an FJR person - just want to put that out there beforehand." That was a cut-and-paste.

Why ask "reliable, powerful and comfortable" and then exclude the very bike that comes to mind that checks off all three boxes very well, probably better than any cruiser-style bike? (I know several people with Yamaha FJRs, and they all really like them.)

"I would primarily be using the motorcycle to ride around town and go for leisure rides on weekends to the Kawarthas, etc. However, if the occasion calls for it l do want the motorcycle to be comfortable enough to ride to say, Ottawa, for example."

Okay, so for "ride around town" then being relatively light and compact would be a good thing, but "comfortable enough to ride to say, Ottawa <presuming that said original poster is from the Toronto area>" that means it would be best to have a comfort-oriented riding position and decent wind protection and decent suspension (which cruiser-style bikes generally don't have ... not enough travel).

The thing that comes to mind - setting aside what the bike looks like! - is a Honda VFR800.

...
I get cruisers, they are style buys -- kinda the motorcycle equivalent to high heel shoes -- speed, cornering, cushioning, stopping, comfort, element control and terrain limited -- but damn they can make the owner look great!

VFR 800 isn't one.

Given the budget, Harley's are out except for the Sportys. The new 1200S might be a candidate, it comes in at the right price - I see it's main limitation being range.

Star/Yamaha stepped out of the game in this price range.

Honda Rebel 1100 would tick the boxes, the only problem I see with it is sheer ugliness. Around $14K out the door.

Guzzi Audace could get you out the door for $20K - cost of ownership and Japanese level dependability are tradeoffs.

Indian has the Chief, another option for under $20K. The Indian FTR is kind of a hybrid between naked and power cruiser -- they are a steal at the moment, you can get one out the door for less than $16K. It might be my first choice given your wants and needs - all other power cruisers are >$25K.

Suzuki C90 would be the closest to your Yamaha 1100. Around $13K and comes with windshield and bags.

Kawi's Vulcan 900 is in there too, not a striking bike but cheap and performs with the best.

Visit the manufacturer's websites to compare those models. They are all I can think of that come in the price/performance range. Style is always in the eyes of the beholder.

My street bob was $1000 over his budget, all in, delivered to my doorstep. It would have been under his budget but I added ABS, forward controls, paint, and a luggage rack.

I find it to be entirely adequate for my needs. Yes the brakes and suspension suck. The braking was not an issue once I was told to use more rear brake as the weight distribution is different on cruisers. I used to not even bother with the rear brake other then corners coming from a street bike. The suspension bottoms out easy with my wife on the back but I rarely notice it otherwise.

I doubt most people on here are actually pushing their bikes to the limits of their spec sheets on public roads.

All, thank you kindly for all your inputs thus far. This is really the initial stage of my search for a new motorcycle and no matter what my likes / dislikes are, Im going to give each on of your suggestions a good look and weigh the pros and cons.

Keep em coming, if there are more. I'm compiling a list already :)

Cheers!

It's just that I've had one for 10+ years and I think it's time for a different one. That's all. I'll still be keeping my original bike and riding it from time to time.

I would say a 2017ish BMW K1600B or a Triumph Rocket 3.

Sadly all the 'fun' options are probably going to lack in reliability vs the safe choice: Japanese.
Wow the Rocket looks like a beast! Definitely going to read up more on that one!

If I was in the market for a new cruiser, the Breakout is the one I would buy. Fit it with wire wheels. Sunglo black paint job. No matter how fast the other guy is, nothing beats a Harley.

didn't see any mention of Indian?
feather, not dot

the Scout is a great looking option - not the cheaped out Scout 60
makes good power for it's displacement
reviews sound like a good riding bike
same class as a Sportster but way better suspension, brakes, handling
doesn't seem to suffer from the chick's bike image of the Sportster

well within your budget, OP

Love the breakout. Looks the business but have you ridden it?

It’s raked out and wide rear tire make corning something you don’t look forward to. Straight from the driveway to timmies or the local watering hole and maybe cruise a bit. No wind protection for highway. And ergos will make any travel over an hour painful.

But my god it’s beautiful and I’d love one. But after riding it. Sometimes, it’s best not to meet the hot girl you want and find out she is a total bore in the sack.

It's actually a restyle of the bike I have, the FXSTC. Most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. No, not a sport bike but in the city and the highway it's golden.
