Reality Check

Why we ride.

I ride because its real. We all live in an increasing reality-free world. We listen to manufactured music made in music factories by music-making robots. We meet our friends on Facebook instead of face-to-face. We move from our centrally heated houses into our air conditioned offices and back again, and have to check the internet to see what the weather's been doing outside all day. We don't travel -- we watch other people travel on our digital tv's. We drive our air conditioned cars with our digital music turned up loud and forget that the real world exists outside.

But riding a bike is real. When it rains you really get wet. When the sun shines, you get really hot. To go around corners you really have to shift your body and balance the machine. Make a mistake and it will really hurt. No seat belts. No air bags. And you really might die. That's part of it for sure. If I go a few days without riding I start to lose my grip on reality. Thats what kept me riding for 30 years, and will keep me riding for 30 more.

^^^^ I couldn't have expressed this any better myself. :)
