would be awesome power plant for a to scale model tank lol u could probably ride in it!

Are you aware of the Rc club that flies out of my home farm, outside guelph, beside Everton... Everything from foamies, drones and fast jets, everything in between depending on the day.. Sat and Sunday afternoons are the most active...

I’m an RC sailboat guy , we race 50” OD boats , it’s a lot harder than actual boats .

My motorcycle mate is crazy for RC planes and makes me ride all over the place to watch gliders and planes . I understand it can get goofy expensive.

Been taking my grandkids to the annual event 5 min from my place every year. The variety and range of expense is unreal.

Thinking maybe an electric hydrofoil boat next for when the lake is perfectly calm (y)

I used to be huge into RC planes. Started when I was about 13 or 14, was an instructor with MAAC a few years later.

Got away from it for a long time about 10 years later, returned for a bit...then got into Heli's. Spent many dollars enjoying that hobby but eventually got away from it as well. It was just hard to find the time for either.

I have a DJI drone now. Hardly any skill required, especially compared to helis, but I still get to put some skills to use and I can fly it a lot more places than I could really fly the heli or particularly the planes. I take the drone with me all over the place on the bike now and needless to say I get some great shots with it.

for airplanes (y) this would be my speed:

I use to race RC offroad 2 wheel electric, way back in the day. Tower hobbies was the go to to order from in the States.
I still have my RC's at my parents house, haven't touched them in years.
I have my 2 wheel hobby now. :ROFLMAO: (y)

One of the guys at the event i mentioned earlier brought two jet engined planes.I was told he had an estimated $50k invested in them.Crazy! But really fun to watch. They usually have a local pilot come in and do touch n go's with his ww1 biplane.

I have known a few people that were deep into model planes. My favorite was a handmade avro arrow that needed to be disassembled to fit in the bed of his pickup (and even then required the tail gate open. I have no idea how many hours he had into it.

The last RC plane I made was about $1,000. Then I thought "I could build a real boat for the money and actually go for a ride". That was decades ago when one actually built stuff from balsa, silk and dope. Now much of it is ready to fly.

If you're out for a ride around Hamilton / Burlington there's an active RC model air park on King Road. Good for some viewing and part of a nice ride.

I got curious about RC drones. Read up on it... turns out if you're slightly able to tinker you can get it done.

Considering that i built my computer, i'm guessing it's close-ish to the same skill level if you do your research on the parts?!

But then there's flying them which is a whole other ball game.

I think i'll stay away from yet another expensive hobby. Motorcycles are expensive enough

And drones are becoming about as easy to use as a Segway (again due to idiots that can't help themselves from doing incredibly stupid things). A social media influencer filmed himself from his drone that he then flew over the crowd at the raptors celebration. TC should make an example of him and hit him with everything they have. A drone falling 30+ storeys onto people with no place to hide would not be pretty. If he had an issue, there was pretty much a 100% chance of injury. I wouldn't be surprised if the next round of regulations only allows drones on specific fields (like RC plane regs).

@GreyGhost those regs would put a damper on Amazon's delivery drones. I think they would fight it.

My BIL got into model planes for a while. Has 5 or 6 of them.
My brother went to gas RC cars years ago and gave me his old electric one. Used it maybe a handful of times. My youngest likes the F150 one we got at Costco.

If anyone is interested in the old electric one dm me. I'll sell it cheap if it's worth anything to someone.

yeah i tried a free one, with no assists and it wasn't obvious
then i tried a 35 dollar one that had hover assist and it was a lot easier

i kinda wanna get one, but i'd like to build my own. Also i'm sure my kid would love to play with one and i feel like it's gonna be a good skillset to have in the future, but at 5 y old don't know how good she'd be, i mean she's good with video games, she'd just have to figure it out lol

I got a few of the tiny drones when they first came out. No cams, just for flying. They were fun. My sister is a producer and she hires pro drone flyers for video shoots in different parts of the world and these are serious bits of kit. I also noticed that the newer regulations mean that drones above a certain weight now can’t be flown in a ton of places and you also have to take a drone operator course.

What's enforcement going to be like. You can see the drone but not the operator, like the twits that shut down airports.

Fun hobby I'm sure. I've looked into it on and off but not even sure where to start! Since my little guy is turning 3 soon I'd like to start getting him interested in this stuff. Any recommendations? I'm thinking electric cars/trucks is a good start point. Maybe he's too young?

@mimico_polak we started with Lego/Duplo around 3. They have simple RC toys for kids that age but what I found is that they did not keep my kids attention. Around 5 is when the TERRIBLE RC cars / Trucks / Robots started showing up as gifts. I would recommend getting something with big tires that goes slow but is fun. Having a rechargeable battery is a bonus otherwise hit amazon for batteries. It'll have to be able to take a lot of abuse (drop, step on, crashes) otherwise it'll last a few hours and endup in the bin.

I've gone through a few <50 drones with my now 8 year old. As much easier as they are to fly now, they are still difficult to fly unless he (and you of course) are willing the put the time in together. I have a little helicopter still in a box (as a gift) that he wants me to take out. I know it'll last about 25 seconds before it can't fly anymore.

Hope this helps.
