Rats on property.

Counted six brown ones last night using flashlight from my deck. They seem to be feasting on bird seed spilled on the ground under the feeder. There's a ground hole going under my shed so I think that's the nest. Has anyone had success using bait-filled containers or is this something I need to leave to professionals?

It's a cookie-cutter subdivision with nearby neighbours, so I think my .22 rifle is out of the question.

Lethal traps??

Or, the bucket with enough water in the bottom that they can't touch, but not so much it will help them get out of the bucket. Put a rod across the top that rolls, and a dab of peanut butter in the middle... They will try to get to the peanut butter, rod rolls, they fall in and are dead by morning.

I remember that trick! My dad used to put pails in the barn set up like that. Then we got terriers :p One chomp and they're done.

Holy ****!!! The rats on your deck have flashlights?!?!?! You should move!

Rats & mice, it seems like feeding on seeds and grains. Why not stop putting bird seed there?

Or maybe adopt a cat?

They are not in your home and you are complaining? lol

Bird seed is most likely not enough food for them, are you certain they are rats and not some other kind of rodent. Rats are getting very bold, I saw about 10 a few evenings ago in the parking lot (dumpster) at a nice restaurant near Leslie&401. The restaurant had traps (white boxes "POISON") all around near the building.

Found a dead one in my shed. Brown Rat by the looks of it. Guy at Home Hardware gave me a couple of Bait Boxes and some poison blocks with Bromodiolone. He says I have to wipe out the whole colony or else they'll just keep multiplying.

I think I know where their food is coming from. There's a family 4 doors down that throws all their garbage into a pile in the back yard to create mulch for their garden. I'm going to go talk to them today but I don't think I'll get much cooperation. 2 years ago I called bylaw enforcement on them, they were raising fish in a swimming pool and drying them on their deck, smell would gag you.

Whatever you do, don't beat them with a shovel so your neighbours can see..

Gotta be careful with poison, you don't want to kill other pets.

That was definitely my concern, so I picked up 2 of these:

I have to keep monitoring it for consumption, I was told it could take a couple of weeks to wipe them out. I really detest harming animals, but we have dogs over from the neighbourhood playing with each other in our yard, too much risk for disease, there's rat feces and urine everywhere.

Get a cat. I'm serious, that's actually what they do. My cats bring me "presents" all the time.
