Racing on the DVP

I'm sure many of you have thought of this, but how cool would it be to be able to Run up and down the DVP with no idiot drivers pulling into your lane or never having to look over your shoulder for the red cherries.

Fundraising Mara/Walk/Bike-athons can close the DVP for a day and have their event, how can car/motorcycle enthusiasts do the same?

The IDEA: Individually timed runs from bottom to top and/or top to bottom of the DVP.

Now, THEORETICALLY, let's say money wasn't an issue and insurance and all the safety precautions were adhered to by law. What does it take to close down a highway and run an event like this?? What type of safety by-laws would we adhere to? How much coverage would there need to be for insurance?

If this can be down in Cali, why not here?

2 points:
- Ken Block's a professional, not your typical average amateur rider
- Sometimes we have to worry about the idiot riders unfortunately

Hay bales. You wouldn't be able to buy enough of em.

Roadway was not designed with anywhere near enough run-off WHEN something goes wrong at the potential speeds involved.

During one summer when the DVP was undergoing maintenance, before the entrance ramp was closed off, a few of us got on the northbound lane off Pottery Rd./Bayview. We soon realized we were the only people on the DVP. We didn't go all out but it was an unexpected treat.

The massive crash-a-thon might be entertaining, but we NEED riders with poor skills and questionable judgement kept intact. Who do you think keeps the police distracted when the rest of us go riding?

If you're seriously asking, it would take a continent-load of cash aimed at the municipal AND provincial government. For reference, I provide the Cape Breton TT.

You all make very good points! Especially with RunOffs. Tourist Trophy was the first that came to mind. They've got effn buildings! But also a ton of country roads.

Perhaps an age/experience restriction and a hefty entrance fee/contribution? (Perhaps $10,000 fundraised that goes to a charity?)

I know I'm just dreaming now but sometime's that's where awesome things start =D

Hahah, That's aweosome! Same reason why I like traffic accidents(minor taps) on the 401/DVP. Once that puppy clears up, it's WOT!

It would be worth doing if we did it for like 5 hours on the day of one of those charity races, and opened it up before it for like $2500 a pop (or sponsors) to anyone with a car or bike to do the DVP TT to go as fast as they could handle. You get a slot and a start time.

The trouble is, we live the nation of Cockblockistan, where feats speed and danger call a lot of people out as the pussies they are and it hurts their feelings.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to go to the track or the drag strip?

Hahah, yea I realized that and was about to edit my post. Guess it stays =P

Yeah! I was thinking the same thing, perhaps having a joint event to save costs(if any) and reduce aggravation for the people needing to get downtown.

Usually the runs are from 8-4ish right? It'll be hard to do it before since set-up usually takes up all night. But definitely after the marathon, it's all game until late night.

An average commute from the bottom to the top takes about 10 minutes at the limit, 3-5 at speed. Releasing the riders every 15 secs for 5 hours at $2500 a head nets you a cool $3million. No idea how much costs(insurance/mgmt/employees) will be, but even if it's 60%, a good $1m goes to charity.

..yup, I'm bored, n still dreaming =P

uhm don't people do this currently on the DVP?

Wasn't there a car version of this at one point? It was like $10,000. Maybe it was during the Indy you could pay to use the track on the gardiner? I thought that Dragon's Den guy did it or something.

There is the Bay Street Grand Prix, but that's kart racing. Even still, I wonder if they would be connected enough to sell some spots to motorcyclists for laps.

You would have to put a request in with the city (or whoever operates the road in question). Typically, they will consider closing a main artery briefly for major movie/TV productions, or large charitable organisations with strong public involvement. Maybe if it was a WRC event they might allow it for one stage, like they allow secondary city streets to be closed over a wekend for major race series. In those cases, the economic benefit to the city has to be proven. Certainly, safety and liability for the event also have to be demonstrated from the organiser, as a minimum.

Use some smaller displacement motorcycles to slow down and block traffic. This will create some distance to race. The trick is to block the section a good KM or more behind where you want to duke it out. The amount of time this consumes nullifies the ability for an effective police response.

A similar stunt happened in Vancouver with high end cars. Just don't make their mistake and only make 1 run at it at a time.

5 hours?

Then the 2nd rider launches himself to the moon and it takes half a day to get the air ambulance to pick him up and clean up the debris.

Silly idea..

I am constantly thinking it could be a great charity event if someone organized a rally race or something on public streets. Many cities have some great roads that you could do this well if the roads were closed and it was a legal event. Even out the country would be cool.

I would enter.

Probably too dangerous for bikes though with no run off.
