Quietest helmet?

I would assume the most quietest helmets are the one with the least amount of open vents. I have only ownly owned 2 brands of helmets so I can't comment on others a shoei and arai. The shoei to me is more quieter possibly because it is more aerodynamics perhaps?

I have a Bell Star and it seems to work well, though I think I will invest in some ear plugs for long rides.

A big part of this the the aerodynamics from the bike and riding position. I have done a lot of research due to the fact I cannot wear ear plugs and would like to keep my hearing. This is the best solution to 99% of the noise.

Ear plugs for sure.
Brit test in the Earphones thread tested a bunch of helmets and they all got 100 db and up at 70 mph

So just get earplugs or noise reducing earphones -23 --28 db and relax.

Then a low cost lid does just fine....in fact chasing big money for quiet is a waste in my view.
...

I agree. Keep in mind that any sustained sound level in excess of 86dba is causing hearing loss. I don't think any helmets will meet that.

My priority in a helmet is style, fit and weight. I don't worry about noise because they all suck, to one degree or another and I wear noise cancelling earphones.

I mentioned Schuberth earlier in the thread and if anyone noticed the Schuberth S2 is a sub 85db helmet at highway speed, and the Schuberth C3 is sub 84db at highway speed.

Now I do agree spending a lot of money simply for a helmet that is quiet would be stupid, but the price you are paying for a
Schuberth is for the fit and finish, the quality of materials, the engineering, the aerodynamics, and the quietness.

interesting, never thought of that. Makes perfect sense I don't think I'm a big fan of those "fins" on the top. But I do find it very comfortable otherwise.

Im not sure you can say they are quiet helmets with certainty as it depends on what your windshield is, riding style, what you're wearing around your neck, are you carrying a passenger (turbulence), and many other factors.

If you look on line there is a lot of criticism of that claim being based on a particular bike configuration and in fact a configuration that had an out of phase wave form that quieted the Shuberth. Given the British test of NO helmet( of 40 + tested ) less than 100 db at 70 mph and the Shuberth claim which at 85 is a HUGE difference since dB is logarithmic. Those helmets in the Brit tests would be 300% louder - 3 x ...something simply does not compute.

As JC100 mentions...there are many factors that will make ANY helmet noisy and only one way to universally deal with it and that is at the entrance to your ear canal.

The Schubert is not going to knock out the drone of my knobbies at 100 kph but $3 ear plugs make it tolerable and I can still chat with riding buddy all day at regular conversation levels through the scala and did :D

I lurk on two American MC forums and the topic of helmet laws etc come up all the time on these forums. It amazes me that hearing loss, wind noise, and watery eyes never seems to enter into the conversation. A full faced helmet plus earplugs gives me comfort, ability to hear and see, and protection from flying debris.
