Questions To Harley Riders

BMW already tried to bust the Harley market in the late 90's.It was a miserable failure.I wonder what makes them think it will work this time?

I don’t know if I consider it a competitor to Harley. Cruiser style bike for someone that doesn’t want a Harley. Triumph bobber buyers and other retro kind of bike market. Just a cool bike to ride around but doesn’t do anything particularly well.

Though given BMW's pricing it may not be far off HD. If they can price it in the lower end of the market they'll sell quite a few. they won't sell one to me, but there'll plenty of others.

Everytime I look at that engine arrangement on either of those bikes it makes me wonder how the heck anyone could tolerate riding it for any length of time in the hot summer months with all that heat from the cylinders blowing directly onto your lower legs at speed.

I owned a 1984 R80RT for 14 years. The heat from the cylinders was never a problem. My 2001 Goldwing 1800 was far worse for engine heat.BMW has always had the best aerodynamics and ergonomics of any bike.Take an R1250RT for a demo ride.

Even if you don't like it, we should all be glad these manufactureres are still trying and doing different things in the motorcycling world

I've always worried about the operating cost of an HD. Friends that have them don't complain, but they sure spend a lot more than I do in parts and labor. BMW anything scares me -- they have some great designs, cool tech and lots of style, but they are not close to Japanese bikes when it comes to dependability or cost of ownership.

I don't mind working on my bikes... but given the choice of holding a throttle or a wrench... it's all throttle.

......
WHY I love Harley Davidson? Well, I'm not exactly a "Harley guy.." but the bike has a ton of USEABLE power, it's just fun to ride. It hauls ass. It corners unbelievably well for a big heavy bike. I don't care about specs and stats, just ride one of these things and you will see what I mean. I chose the 2 models I have owned because they handle well (yeah, yeah, for a Harley...) but for the kind of riding I do it's great - Think Hockley Valley sweepers at about 120ish. Everyone I knew from this forum and otherwise got tired of taking an onramp as fast as they can on a 600cc super sport. If you're a track rider then comparing anything to a Harley is just stupid. I can ride the HD all day and want to keep going and going.

At the end of the day it's all preference, but after owning 6 bikes and 13 years of riding, I am 100% happy with my HD.
Also, it looks pretty damn cool.

I have had 3 BMW's with boxer engines over the last 10 years. The heat is not something noticed and I have ridden in some really hot weather out in Utah.

Are the surverys true?

Are they as unreliable as they say?

I have never been left stranded. If they were as bad as some people say no one would tour on them. They have had some issues, but even those issues like the final drive on early models of the 1200GS did not effect everyone. My '06 GS was a model that people had issues with the final drive as well as the servo breaks. Did not experience any of that, was a solid and dependable ride.

I feel very comfortable heading out on a 7000+ km trip that I will get there and back again without any mechanical issues.

It is a completely different bike for one, and if you stopped doing something or working towards something because of one failure no one would get anything done. That James Bond BMW has a unique Euro look to it, not something that would appeal to the cruiser crowd. The R18 is a different story, it has a great sound and styling that feels more American.
