Question on US Bikes

I was wondering if there is anything I should know about when buying a bike that has been brought up from the states? Especially ads that say they are in the process of doing so.

For example,
http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...BR-600RR-full-RACE-exhaust-W0QQAdIdZ504351615

Seems to me one of the cheapest 2007+ CBRs available with low mileage. Just wanted to ask if there is anything in particular I should be looking out for in regards to buying a bike that has been brought up from the States.

Thanks!

Its the same as buying bike here except you need to add to the purchase price-
RIV fee -220$
Time to pick it up and properly export it from US and Import it into Canada
GST at the border
PST when you register it
Trip to Canadian tire for RIV inspection (different from safety).

All my bikes are from the states.

I have a U.S. bike, no problems, except the speedometer & tripmeters are all messed up!
As long as it has an Ontario registration with the correct VIN.

Super easy and cheap to pick up a bike, yourself, from the US. Canada feels like such a closed market with our inflated prices. I picked up my Ducati a few years back from the USA

Check the "sticky" at the top of this forum.

I have a 2008 CBR1000RR from the US and any warranty work I needed done the bike had to be brought back to a US dealer to be repaired or I had to pay myself to have it repaired here.

Thanks for the replies, but I was being unclear. I meant to ask if there were anything I should look out for in regards to bikes that have already been brought up from the States. I wouldn't be going down to NY to pick up the said bike in the link i provided as this seller said he would be doing so. Hence, why I made a new thread as I wasn't buying a bike directly from the states and importing it over myself.

Your biggest concern should be whether it has been imported correctly and its "brand" on the ownership. If it was imported incorrectly you will not be able to plate it and ride it, same thing goes if it has a salvage title.

In the end that $1000 you're going to save probably isn't worth it, since when its time to resell potential buyers will be asking the same questions of you and many will simply pass on a usa bike.

And for all of those who are going to run in here and claim that usa bike have the same value look at the price of that bike, the fact that it isnt sold yet, and this thread that the OP made. :D

Also check out the "other" ad for this bike: http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-sport-bikes-2007-Honda-CBR-W0QQAdIdZ511747629

The entire ad makes me lol
Shinko tires? 12-20 hp increase? Isle Of Man TT? :lmao:

Nice plate btw ;)

What about getting it safetied with the speedometer/odometer in miles instead of kms? When you try to sell it will this be a problem?

When you take it to canadian tire for the RIV inspection they'll put some stickers on it that say it's in miles. At least they did that with my bike (the speedo showed both km and miles though, so not sure if it'd be just stickers if the speedo showed only mph).

Digital speedometers and odometers switch over between the two at the push of a button; analog ones are the only that don't.

Don't listen to Paul1000rr - the more he writes on any topic, the more you see that he is clueless.

The only difference between most used US bikes and Canadian bikes is that one was originally sold in USA and the other was originally sold in Canada (California bikes may have stricter catalitic converter regulations). On my CBR, I pressed one button on the cluster and it switched speedometer and odometer from mph/miles to km/h / km. The only thing that stayed 'American' is the digital engine temperature gauge is in Fahrenheit. If the bike is properly imported and Ontario plated (i.e. clear title), who cares.

Personally, I would prefer the seller to do all the importing paperwork before I'd buy that bike. As someone else mentioned, you want the bike to be properly imported and have a clear title to get it registered in Ontario.

Start at the beginning.

Make sure it's being exported from the US correctly.

Make sure it's "brand" is suitable for registration in Canada.

Make sure it's being imported correctly so you can actually register it.

Then start to worry about the bike itself. Will it pass RIV inspection, will it pass safety, is it a straight bike, ever been down etc etc.

The easiest thing for someone who effs up the import process is to palm off their mistake on some poor sap up here.

Do your homework. RIV pick up the phone if you have questions. A Carfax/Carproof report will cover US bikes.

i don't think that particular fairing design is available for North America...it's likely aftermarket/chinese bodywork.

still nice bike...ad is retarded tho..

Looks like a heavily customized bike. LOL at the "ostrich seats"

No mirrors make me think racetrack.
The paint is not OEM, is it? Is that a kit from ebay? Or was it in an accident, repainted?

The exhaust is not $1,700, it is around 800-900 brand new, since it is used, the actual value it brings to the transaction is half at most ($400).

Can't you get a similar bike here, without the possibility of a branded title that cannot be imported into Canada?

Interesting. Apparently there was a limited Hannspree limited edition 600RR sold in UK. But of course, you can get a Chinese knock-off fairings set, which most likely happend and which is obviously a red flag for many good reasons.

Switch from either trip A or B then press the reset button to change from *f to *c.
