Do you look at your collection and wonder if you are wasting money? they have to be insured and maintained and what if you find you only ride one of them a handful of times, but can't bring yourself to part with it? Is it nuts to have more than 2?

Thank you. This thread is tailor made for me. Yes. Yes. No.

They have to be insured and maintained and what if you find you only ride one of them a handful of times, but can't bring yourself to part with it? My track Duc has kicked my butt a few times and still needs to be tamed. Not going anywhere yet.And only my Couchrocket is insured.

Is it nuts to have more than 2? No.Just like Inreb said.

Do you look at your collection and wonder if you are wasting money? No. A life's passion is never a waste of money.

they have to be insured and maintained and what if you find you only ride one of them a handful of times, but can't bring yourself to part with it? Yes, and it's worth noting that the one that costs the most to insure, is the one ridden the least, and vice versa. Still don't care.

Is it nuts to have more than 2? No, I have 4. One is a race bike, so 3 are licensed and insured.

* * *

Some time back, the topic of "How many bikes do you have" came up at a VRRA winter dinner meet-up. I had the fewest bikes of anyone there. Ten ... twelve ... but the best answers were "It depends how you count them", and "I don't know".

I will say that all four of mine are in complete, functional, running condition ...

I have two at the moment. I have an sv650 and a cbr 1100. The SV is better for commuting, its more agile in traffic, its lighter and doesnt produce nearly as much heat at the cbr does. I'll need to do some maintenance to the cbr this week and probably next, so its nice to have another bike to ride around while one is getting fixed.

How does insurance work on them? For example, if you have an S1000RR and a CBR125R, would you pay the higher of the two insurance costs? Or would you pay in the middle? Or do you declare how much you ride them both and pay percentage?

Not looking for a second bike now, just curious.

You pay BOTH - with a negligible multi-bike discount on both. It would be a very extreme case for the multi-bike discount on an expensive bike to insure, to fully cover the cost of a second cheap bike to insure.

I wish it did work the other way though -- I'd love to keep my CBR250RA for commuting and get a CBR600RRA as the weekend twisties toy if it only meant paying for the 600.

Why would you pay both? You can't ride them at the same time. I guess I can see having to pay fire/theft on the cheaper one but that's not much at all.

I had 3 bikes at one point last year.

Realized it cost too much money to maintain/insure 3 bikes when I only do "real" riding on the weekends. The cost of the actual bike was not really a problem. Ended up selling one of them and now I have two.

Even though I have two bikes, I only have one insured because I'm on the fence about selling the other one due to maintenance/insurance costs. I ride much less than I did previous years due to being spoiled by nice out of province roads.

I have two bikes, only one is insured and ridden daily. The other is for track duty only. (First time riding it will be this Thursday)
I spent all kind of money modifying both to my taste/needs and I don't regret it.
The track bike will probably get ridden 10-15 times/year while my street bike is used for everything else.

The way I see it, some people spend $20K+ on a car, why not spend less (or more if you have expensive taste) and have some toys to enjoy?
To me a car is just a mode of transportation during the winter/lazy summer days, my bike(s) is my real enjoyment.

No you cant ride both at the sametime BUT it is possible for both to be ridden at the sametime.

Also, insurance is for a single vehicle, so it would make sense to have two policies for two vehicles rather than one policy for both (it would be the case if insurance was individual based rather than vehicle based).

i have a few, its not bad as maintenence is a factor of use and some are never really ridden far. Insure and plate cost what they cost, no way around it. you could have too many but I have no idea what that number is.

When we had three sailboats, that was too many.

I have 3 of them and all get used on a regular basis; never once have I looked at them and thought they were a waste of money. Every time I go in the garage I think if I should get a 4th one :).

Kind of unrelated since I have 2 cars and bike instead of two bikes but considering the 2nd car has been sitting for over a year and I ride my bike only a few times every month, yes I feel like I'm wasting a ******** of money on insurance.

But the difference is, you can suspend the cars coverage and just leave on fire and theft. I know statefarm does not allow a bike to be on standby... I'm not sure about others though.

Yea they do...

At one time i had a VTR1000, an SV1000 and an GSXR750 insured at the same time, called them and told them i want the VTR off the insurance and they offered to just put it on fire and theft...i said sure...7 bucks a month.

They dont all have to be insured at the same time....currently i have the VTR uninsured and sitting in the shed while i ride the supermoto.

YES!! i use to keep excel spreadsheets tracking how much i spend on each bike, i stopped after the numbers starting getting too large for my liking. :lmao:

they have to be insured and maintained
my bikes are vintage (1979, 1980, 1974), so insurance isn't so bad, adds up to about the same as a 1000cc bike.

it is nuts, but what can i say, i like to hoarde bikes, lol

They do but it gets complicated with how they calculate your premiums.

Even with the car suspended it costs around $20 per month. Not much but it adds up over years. They also don't like you to suspend coverage for the whole year. Honestly, if I didn't have to get an appraisal done to put insurance on it, I'djust leave it uninsured while stored. No one's going to steal it and it's not worth much anyway.

I have 3 and the wife has 2.

Yes expensive but we are passionate riders and each bike is different and serves different purposes.

I just budget for them and enjoy them all.
