Quebec/Montreal University Tuition set to double

They specifically state that this is related to out of province. If they meant international, I expect they would say international.

"Legault defends tuition hike for out-of-province students as means to protect French
Premier says having so many English-speaking students in Quebec hurts French language

Premier François Legault says increasing university tuition for out-of-province students will help protect the French language by limiting the number of anglophones studying in Quebec."
When I was working for an American high tech company we did a trade show in Montreal. No one in our booth could speak French. Most of the people coming to the booth were either fluent in English or made an effort.

There were a few carrying a chip and played the French card. We gave them English line cards. A potful of leading edge material is published first in English. If you don't want to be in the first wave feel free to wait for the translation.

Cornwall to Edmundston = 6 1/2 hours. One pit stop. Keep your notwithstanding clauses.
Then I laugh my arse off watching they're commercials ALL IN ENGLISH begging for tourists. Pick a lane.

To be honest, 50+ years ago I spent a week or so working on a project in the eastern townships and the people were fantastic.

I couldn’t speak French and they couldn’t speak English but the project went well. We were even invited to their Christmas party. Nothing but good memories.

I don’t know if the attitudes have changed. All it takes is one crusader or politician.

Meh i dont think they need to beg for tourists. Most of my coworkers have gone to visit it without any issue and thats without me talking to them about it. If they ask ill make suggestions for quebec city area since i grew up there.
But i've got this brown dude, doesnt speak a lick of french that went to saguenay without an issue. It's pretty far from the "main city centers" that have more english and touristy stuff like Montreal and Quebec city but he had no issues or complaints.

Other coworkers have had to work with Quebec counterparts back in the day in previous jobs at different companies on contracts and have nothing but good things to say, and they'd be the first to b!tch at me if anything was wrong lol.
Obviously there will be aholes as well but that's everywhere

Lots of scenic sights to be explored, my parents weren't super outdoorsy so i didnt get to see as much growing up but when i go there now, i try to make it a point to visit something i've never done/visited growing up and am always pleasantly surprised.

Quebec is beautiful, the people are nice.

Come to think about it, I can say that for every Canadian province and US state I've visited!

I've been to all but one.

I would guess a lot of the attitude would come from the "This is Canada and we speak English" crowd trying to make a point. In my case I used the little high school French I remembered and a lot of gestures. It worked.

A friend and his buddies snowmobiled into a town around Rouyn and someone did someone a favour and when they ran into each other later at the hotel it became a fight over which table could buy the other table more drinks.

P.S. As my co-worker found out, if you can't speak French, speaking English with a French accent doesn't help

 it was sound logic though

Arguments
1. Out province students go back home and not stay in Quebec
Isn't that true for most graduating students to go back home?
2. Do not want to spend more money of English universities and not have the students "talent" stay in Quebec
The money is some how to off set the talent leaving Quebec? What is Quebec offering for them to stay?
They are not worried the other provinces might double the tuition for Quebec students?

How do you not only preserve but grow the rich language and culture Quebec has when surrounded rest of English Canada and the United States?

Are they preserving French or Quebec French?

Ethnic groups cut off from the mother country typically alter the language and in some cases the cut off groups can barely converse with those from the motherland.

Watch some Brit TV. The Brits don't even understand themselves.

Sadly some of the splinter groups feel they are superior to the originals.

Well yeah just look at english,
Scotland, Ireland (heck have you seen Snatch LOL), Newfoundland, the different regions of the USA, australia...they all speak a different version of english

Why wouldn't it be the same for Quebec and their french?! I see people laugh at how different it is but i don't understand to be honest. Languages evolve with time.

I figure a better method would be each student "owes" back the subsidized portion of the tuition to the government entity that paid it. In this context your tuition may be 7K per year today out of pocket but in reality it was say 14K but that top half was paid partially by Ontario and the feds through subsidies to the University.

So my new plan as an example, numbers vary, you pay the same 7K above out of pocket (loan, cash, whatever) up front and the rest is debt owed but a set amount is forgiven for each year after graduation you work in the jurisdiction that paid it. Go to school in Ontario and then go work in Alberta day one after graduation you now owe the entire Ontario portion back but not the federal. Go day one to the US, you owe both back. Forgive a portion each year they stay and pay taxes in the province/country and say over 5 years it zeros out. Go to school in Quebec and split afterwards, well that now comes with a cost.

Ideally I would even like that forgiveness to be based on how much one pays in taxes...but that may too much too fast for some.

In the end the subsidies are now paying things forward and can now not be based on where you grew up but where you will pay taxes. No need to offer Marine Biology in Regina, etc.

I used to worry about not speaking French when traveling in Quebec.
Google Translate has now made the French language (and all others) irrelevant.

I have a simpler plan. In the final rear of high school, students declare their career interest and go into a draft (like hockey). Employers draft prospects and fund their education in exchange for employment on a year for year basis.

Highest payers draft first.

Not too many pro sports where they draft players four years before they are eligible to play.

Ron Dennis signed Loois Hamilton to Mclaren's junior program and started funding his karting career when he was 9 years old.
