But will they enforce it?

Aside from e-bikes, now we have a variety of e scooters and powered skateboards vying for lane space. I passed a guy on a skateboard the other day who I clocked at 40kph, swooping and weaving on the road.

Will the Ontario government ever even try to get control of the situation?

Probably not.

Someone will have to get killed, lawsuits will follow, and we might see some movement then.

What good is a ban if no one enforces it?

Toronto banned these small scooters yet they’re everywhere.

No license, no registration, no responsibility or accountability for injuring someone or hitting something.

I agree, but not just "someone" I think it will take 1000's of recorded incidents before anything is noticed...

The scooters should be simple if there was any desire to enforce. Seized and thrown in the trunk of a cop car when spotted. Give the rider a claim tag. Go to court within 30 days and talk to JP about why you should get your illegal unlicensed, uninsured motor vehicle back after you were riding it in public. For a first offence, let the JP's drop the fines in exchange for surrendering the vehicle. Or the rider can pay the fines and impound fee to get it out.

The court system is clogged up as is...this would just cause more issues.

There needs to be a defined / separate process to deal with this.

JP sitting at a window like the payment clerks just for this. Similar to the administrative penalties for parking. A similar but distinct process that is streamlined to speed up processing.

“Quebec’s auto insurance board voted to ban e-bikes if they haven’t passed government safety checks.

“Over the past few years, a multitude of vehicles that look like mopeds or motorbikes have appeared on the market and are being used on roads, bicycle paths and sidewalks,” said a SAAQ news release.”

They aren’t getting their insurance payment cut!

I also found it interesting that the insurance board was banning unlicensed, uninsured motor vehicles. That seems like the ban should have happened at a higher level of government.

We have a combination of issues here. Some laws that are enforced, minimal to no enforcement of other laws, presumably the less critical ones.......... , overcrowded, backlogged court rooms, a revolving door bail system and jam packed jails and prisons. We want all the bad guys in jail, but even if they were charged and convicted there is no space for them.

Where is the overall justice system in everyone's priorities? What are people prepared to spend, or not spend tax wise? What other programs would be cut to fund justice if spending is capped?

The unwillingness to address these questions and put real hard options in front of the electorate is why justice, health and a slew of other programs are not providing the services we need. Instead we have Dougie throwing money at battery plants and pre-election goodies to buy votes.

Rant over for now, thanks. time for dinner.

You have to register and insure an electric car, so should an electric bike...remember when mopeds came out , you had to have a red plate I think and insurance?

You want people that ride uncertified ebikes to go to jail? YIKES.

No, that's ridiculous. I was talking about bad guys in general.

I don't want uncertified ebikers in jail, I'd just shoot them instead. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.

Every government system in Ontario is clogged up. I work in social services and it's a sh*t show. Unfortunately, I highly doubt things will get better anytime soon.

If they impound illegal bikes for 10 days, the tow and storage fees would be enough of a penalty.

Tow and storage would exceed the value of most of the dui mobiles. People with money would bail out their surons and continue riding.
Riding a Suron dirty (no insurance) is a stiff fine - the bike is impounded for 30 days >$1000, the fine and surcharges are another $6500.

I think that’s fair.

IIRC at first they didn't need insurance. When that changed they disappeared.

You're too kind. I'd make them drive away from town until their battery died and make them pedal back with those tiny useless pedals, preferably in a cold rain.
