Purchasing from QC

Good day everyone,

I am planning in purchasing a bike from QC, but I researched and turns out I will have to pay the 9.975% at SAAQ and the 13% in Ontario. However, once registered in Ontario I will get refunded the 9.975% from SAAQ. When I did my research, many indicated that they never received their refund. Did anyone experience this OR the opposite where in receiving the refund was no issue and that the process was simple.

Thanks
Sam

I bought a car from a guy in QC about 15 years ago. I did eventually receive the QC taxes back, but iirc it was about a year later. Didn't bother me much, as the car was still cheaper than a comparable car in ON, even with the QC taxes added on.

Good luck, you can wash titles in Quebec. Be very careful. Lots of weirdly cheap high end sports cars are sold out of there for that reason, usually brought in from the US after being repaired and it gets a clean title. Plenty of info on this out there.

Good to know. Thank you for the info. so I guess a 2012 Harley night rod with 8000 km for $14500 is too good to be true

If this is a used bike, be very careful. Make sure that the title is clean. Quebec allows rebuilt, Ontario does not.

Not familiar with the Harley market but after looking quick, it is on the low side. Doesn't necessarily mean anything but you just need to be careful is all. There is a lot less "back checking" on the salvage history of a vehicle when it's brought into QC, compared to Ontario where a branded title will follow it forever.

Ask them for the VIN so you can check it through MTO. If they will not give it to you, run. If they do, make sure it matches when you pick up the bike.

Retail low: $8300
Retail high: $9800

After transport, not that great of a deal.

I don't know much about people importing vehicles into Quebec and somehow cleaning the registration, but I wouldn't be concerned though. We're not talking about a high end vehicle here like a valuable sports car.

Bikes tend to be cheaper in Quebec in general so if it's a slightly lower price than you're expecting, I think that's normal.

I have seen a bunch of ads where the seller says a bike is VGA (véhicule gravement accidenté) on the registration, and the price reflects that.

Well you should be somewhat concerned. Ontario does not register branded vehicles for the street. So if you buy one in Quebec by accident, congrats on your new track bike.

A $15K night rod would definitely not be my first choice of track bike but to each their own.

I'm talking about bikes that have somehow had their registrations 'cleaned' when imported into Quebec, as mentioned by KWDRZ. Not much you can do if the registration is clean. I doubt Ontario would know either.

If you buy a bike that's marked VGA and expect to register it in Ontario, then that would be pretty dumb. But it's pretty easy to prevent that - by looking at the registration.
