Purchase advice - Dropped in parking lot vs. off-roaded sport bike

Hi All,

Happy Holidays. I'm looking at buying my first bike and I have two prospective bikes (identical model & 2008MY):

Option 1) mileages is around 20,000km, but the bike has been dropped at slow speed in parking lot;

Option 2) mileage is around 30,000km but the bike has been off-roaded (gravel) few times.

Given solely the above information, which option of bike would you purchase? (in terms of potential damages incurred, etc).

Hope to join you guys next year in the riding season !

Thanks !

Buy the cheaper one, what difference does it make that one has been ridden on gravel? Every bike I have ever owned has been ridden down gravel roads.

Logic would suggest that there's a lot less chance of concealed damage by being ridden on gravel vs having been dropped?

Honestly, street bike, dirt bike, cruiser...whatever...being driven on gravel is hardly a big deal. A few stone chips on lower fairings and paint perhaps (but not necessarily) if it was ridden at high speed, aside from that I fail to see how that could "damage" anything.

Off roaders do tend to drop their bikes quite a bit as well. Why not check for damage in person?

Since when are gravel roads considered off roading? Jeez you guys baby your bikes.

Even if you were doing actual off roading, it's probably not going to hurt the bike much. I took my 650R down some light trails and it didn't hurt it at all. I've ridden both the 650R and my RS125 (and every car I've ever owned including a WRX and my 944) through fields and had no problem.

Buy the gravel one since that's not offroading one bit and gravel isn't going to hurt anything.

The problem is that people tend to exaggerate in their ads, if it says dropped in a parking lot, that could mean crashed at speed, off-roaded on gravel could mean buskwacking, river fording and crashing into trees and stumps.

I took my 250 'offroading' a few times, it wasn't too bad...this trail was half decent, just some roots, rocks and ruts but a sportbike can do half decent with at least a foot or so of space, it won't really mess anything up unless you fall and break something. I just had regular pilot powers too

Care to share the details on each bike aside from the dropped/driven history?

What one is more realistic to insure for a new rider may be more of a deciding factor for you than you may realize at this point as well. ;)

This. I also like high mileage bikes for this reason

I agree. What's the difference between a 10 - 15 kmph drop in a parking lot vs. on a side road? None, as far as I can see.
