PSA - Latest Scam Call - Exit Ontario

We use LibreOffice. We've been using that, or its predecessor (OpenOffice) for more than 10 years.
Linux Mint (latest distro is "Ulyana") will totally get you off MS and it comes bundled with Libre Office which can even open Visio documents.
No more "registry" bloat, just file systems.

Yeah we have a few guys at work that refuse to use MS and do exactly the above. It is OK for minor stuff but as soon as they have to contribute to any large document etc. that needs to be professional it is an utter shitshow. They touch it and it takes days to sort out the mess when they are done, they of course blame MS, non-standard...... Funny no problem MS to MS...

I am sure it is fine if everyone is using it or for home use, but back and forth between MS is a disaster and remains that way.

Caller ID is spoofed, I assume everyone knows this by now?

I've had it happen twice this year where someone "called me back". They claimed that they just missed a call from me when I didn't call. Not sure if they're they scammer or my number was spoofed when the scammer called them.

I've also noticed most scam calls coming in are from a number very similar to mine, only a few digits off.

The scammers figured out they get a higher answer rate if the number looks like yours. Typically the area code and first three digits match your phone number.

I also have had a few angry people call me and tell me to stop harassing them and take them off the list. I explain that I didn't call, the scammers/duct guys broadcast fake numbers and how they ended up with my number and most calm down.

They keep switching it up, lately it was common to spoof like this. Your number (they are calling) is 416 555 1234, they spoof 416 555 XXXX so you think it is someone you may know or that they live close to you. Of course XXXX is totally random and likely actually someone's number (or they called someone else and spoofed your number).

If you see the above (and do not know the number) I just answer and hang up. I still get LD rings so if the number is any local number and LD, answer and hang up. In other cases if I answer the phone and do not get an immediate response I hang up (it is an auto dialer, may be legit but if you can't dial my number...).

Right. The problem isn't the word-processing and spreadsheet stuff, it's all the other stuff that I have to interact with in the course of doing work: SolidWorks, AllenBradley RSLogix, Fanuc Roboguide, etc. Industrial stuff, that only functions within Windows.

Yeah yeah, there's some software that supposedly lets you run Windows-only programs within Linux. Bear in mind: I sit in front of computers and type at them. I don't need "aggravation". I download a piece of software. I click "Install". It has to work. The end.

You are completely correct.

If you need to interact with other WIN specific s/ware, you do not need another layer of complexity such as WIN emulation software running on Linux.

The suggestion for the use of the Linux O/S was for a "casual use" basis.

Following the "KISS" principle.

I like most of the products that MS offers. Played with open office and some of the google offerings, and the fit and feel just sucks. This is from a guy who runs BSD/x variant OSs at home.

As I was typing this, I just got a call about my amazon account is being suspended...Aghast, tragedy upon tragedies!

Correctly said, there is a gap in format equivalence between Libre Word and MS Word.
Office software, if being used for business collaboration, needs to have the same platform or it becomes messy.

I’ve asked my dad a million times what he accepted when online....’not a thing’

then I see how browser with 5 different programs running at all times. Clean his computer at least once every 6 months or so. He smartened up as it’s been a year and no issues.

Latest discussion:
Him: word and excel stopped working
Me: when did you buy the computer?
Him: about a year
Me: trial version ended. You need to buy a new one.
Him: what!? It’s not free for life?
Me: nope. Here’s a key for one of my licenses

I love how MS is pushing the subscription model nowadays. Seems to be the going route for a lot of software.
Google Sheets
Google Documents
FTW

I only recently learned this.
Many times they spoof a number similar to yours to make you feel less worried about answering.

I block the numbers but with my luck, one of those legit people will try to call to get a sign rental from me and won't be able to get through.

Edit:
Saw this was addressed multiple times already.
Sorry.

Apple runs on UNIX and ever since they started using Intel processors in the Mac (15 years ago) it is efficient and super easy to make MS software or UNIX software run on the Mac platform. If you have MS hardware MS software is your only option. No matter how you slice it that makes Mac the most software portable PC hardware platform in existence.

Huh? Mac is switching to arm processors which is going to make them incompatible with almost everything.

MS has no computer hardware, just gaming consoles.

ARM = Advanced RISC Machines
MS has always run on a computer hardware spec, remember when they use to promote computers as "PC compatible"

Apple has implemented RISC technology on their hardware for decades.
... just checked the Apple site, every laptop they sell today is Intel processor based.
lol for a minute there I thought I have been retired for too long, but it looks like little has changed.

That was Itty Bitty Machines, not Microsoft.
