Prostate !! ?? What's the latest approach?

Qualified success....first pee I've had in 10 months. ...... sort of .....the "void" in void test means dumping all in a single go....only got about 1/4 of that  so back to catheter for now bui have another run at it on the 8th. He said "small step" ....still more than I actually expected given the 10 month hiatus.

Oh yeah he said I could drink coffee too :coffee:

I remember an older guy I worked with years ago went to get his prostate checked. He told me that he asked the doctor to use two fingers. I asked him why, he replied “I wanted a second opinion”.

follow up report....thought I was done with TURP

That's the good news...the bad news is I need a redo on my TURP procedure....nnnoooooo. :cautious:
Sucks, partner thinks it won't cost us out of pocket much if any.
And the surgeon was strutting a few weeks back that he cut me a big hole....well he did not cut me a big enough hole.
Even he couldn't get the catheter in with a wire guide....not the end of the world, the procedure today was not particularly uncomfortable - just one brief discomfort.
The TURP redo won't be a big deal either but there will be a couple months of after effects I could do without.
Worth it to get it sorted tho....sigh.
Won't impact my riding and getting the new bike sorted. Just hoping no dollar hit.
Next ....the dentist...was hoping to hold out fro a few more months but need to get the left side done since it still hurts. It's the one that is cracked. Right bridge is stable

From your initial post

"About 50% of men between the ages of 51 and 60 have BPH, and that number jumps to 70% among men aged 60 to 69 and around 80% of men over 70 years of age." BPH = enlarged prostate.

From my wife:

Men never seem to talk about their plumbing. Women never stop."

Seriously, The issue isn't simple nor is it rare but it doesn't get the air play or support of breast cancer.

In some ways the two are psychologically similar. After 40ish year boobs and joy sticks are rarely needed for procreation but damn they're fun (for guys at least)

TURP and similar procedures seem to have more after issues than a gall bladder removal and you're on the disabled list for many months. If you do YouTube searches there are individual videos of long term problems.

Slightly related, I had to pick up a friend from the hospital last week and drive him home after he had day surgery for an umbilical hernia, A few hours of surgery and then home. Sounds good until you read the fine print.

However he's a bachelor and we stayed with him for the day until a relative could come and keep an eye on him for the weekend. The cousin doesn't drive and he was banned for the short duration. Fortunately the relative was up to the walk for groceries and other needs. He's on restricted duty for two months. Fortunately he's financially stable, not everyone is.

It sounds simple, a couple of hours and the problem is fixed. However the recovery sucks. Mess up and it's worse the second time around. TURP is worse IMO.

One doesn't get the personal care of the good old days but the technology is better.

Money is one of the problems but think about it.

One hundred and fifty MILLION dollars isn't a lot in our overall healthcare budget but it could help one sector a lot, making lives better long term for thousands, every hour of every day of their lives.

Instead our governments have earmarked that money (And like more in overruns) to put in a patch in our cycling network. A patch that could be done for a couple of hundred thousand. The patch serves a few hundred cyclists an hour a day for part of the year. Priorities???

MMMM TURP is relatively low impact operation - it's all done with laparascope instruments. It certainly had little impact on my daily life. It just took a couple weeks to clear some of the tissue and blood.
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that 82% of patients having TURP showed very good subjective and objective improvements in symptom scores and flow rates post operatively at 6 months and after 6 years. Patient satisfaction was maintained with similar subjective and objective improvement up to 12 years post operatively.

When you see inside yourself ( I'm awake for the procedure today ) you quickly understand the visibility for the surgeon is very good.
Unlike the original TURP where my prostate was very tightly embedded and lots of tissue needed to be excised there is very little to remove now...apparently the neck of my bladder is very high so the excision was not complete tho it worked fine for months.
Likely some adhesion or scar tissue prevented the catheter from getting into the bladder.
Surgeon will removed that and open the passage further....nowhere near the amount of tissue the first TURP removed.
In transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a combined visual and surgical instrument (resectoscope) is inserted through the urethra where it's surrounded by prostate tissue. An electrical loop cuts away excess prostate tissue to improve urine flow.
I did not get to see inside in the original resection. Was kind of cool to see this time.
Not concerned about the rebore but just annoyed it needed doing. At no time was the original procedure debilitating.
I'm destined to daily catheter for the rest of my life but normally it is a 5 minute procedure in the bathroom...about the same time as cleaning my teeth....don't really think about it anymore.
Just a bit unlucky with my particular physical structure and the high bladder neck.

IF I had dealt with it years ago, likely would not have the catheter...deal with it boys.... ;) earlier than later.
