Pro and cons for installing scrub tires

Haha, glad to hear that my posts at the fz6 forum still linger around :)

mongol777, would love to meet you and hear the sweet sound of the dual Leo's on your FZ6, it will be a sweet reminder of my own when I had it :) unfortunately, I can't meet you downtown, not with the bike anyway. Not long ago I decided the GO transit makes for a much better commute than riding. Maybe we can meet during the weekend, if you swing by Hamilton, I'll take you around some decent routes (check my "keep your license" thread in Rides & Hookups).

As for the steering, been getting already some input by more experienced riders, overall line of thought is that I'm building good habits, but would love to see what you have to say too. For this thread, my main concern is coming out of the corner, past the apex when I already see my exit--this is where I wish I could step on it harder earlier as am standing it up, and this is where I need more grip as lean as possible. Grip is fine up to the apex at full lean (and bare feathering of the knee for gauging how far I've gone down).

It's all good - all we will need is my FZ6 in the parking lot. You'll sit on my bike and I will do my best to show you how you should position your body on the bike, 5 min tops. Then u can try on your new baby. I am downtown almost all weekdays, close to CN Tower. I'll PM u in a week or so - we'll figure something out.

Awesome.

Blame the scrubs :)
lol yes, of course is the scrubs, what else can it be??

I would prefer my set of Diablo scrubs I had than the pieces of crap power pure brand new set I put on my 750

but opinions are like *** holes

Sure there is,

Buy them from someone who uses them once.

I get it now - I now see from sircastic post that scrubs are track/street DOT certified tires. All this time I thought scrubs are track only.
I know that you have certain rep on this forum and I would believe you that you used them only once. But for people who don't know you - hard to trust someone who says they used it only once.

Scrubs are DOT tires with full tread that can be used track or street. There's a market for these because most street riders spend the majority of their time straight up and down wearing the centre of the tire which is barely touched in track use.

Exactly.

I'll certainly take you up on your offer! I'm downtown at Yonge & Queen most workdays (except when I work from home), CN Tower proximity visit during an extended lunch break would be great for a great cause! Thank you in advance :)

I think I should clarify my previous post in reply to Reciprocity, where I said I'll be coming to him when I'm changing rubber: I don't know if he sells scrubs or not, what I meant is that I'll have him do the tire change (remove old tire from rim, put on new one I provide).

I used to use scrubs on my old bike. Not a bad deal at all. My last scrubs were dragon corsa rear and a grooved slick in front. They performed very well. I would go for them again but I find them quite expensive these days. At $60-$80 I might as well buy new ones.

BTW I always wondered about the whole warm up thing. From my understanding racing tires are a lot softer, right?... soft=grip? So wouldn't they perform decently for street even when they are under optimal operating temperature?

Corasara , you saw my tires after my trip up north, the were melted on the sides but still pretty damn nice on the middle, even tho i run race tires on my bike from new , they don't really wear down that much faster, I've run scrubs before, for my style of riding they last about half the season, but they grip better!
I'm going out thursday night if you want we can trade bikes and go for a rip!
Just run scrubs. For 150 for a set, your out 300 for the season whopteedo ! And your ready for track!

I never said it were tires - I just prefer to rule out any technicalities with the bike and make sure it is sorted.
As for scrubs - even if I buy them from rider who purchased them new:
- no guarantee they are not on their last breath
- they were made for the track and not for the street. If person looking for track tires to increase grip in the city - perhaps time to book some track days (which OP is lready thinking about)

This sounds reasonable to me. The tires I went down on were Michelin Pilot Race M2. They are DOT but I don't think they were ever meant to roll on anything other than warm, dry and smooth pavement.

I'd be definitely down for an evening ride on Thursday, but I probably won't be able to leave until at least 8pm or so. Are you coming to Hamilton? We can definitely meet, also the idea to swap bikes for a little sounds really appealing, would love to get the feel of your R1. PM me when you know more if and when you'll be around.

I've only ever had 2 new sets of tires out of 10-11 track days, scrubs work perfectly fine if you know what your getting, they just don't last as long. You can run them in the advanced group at a track day quite well.

Here's my $0.02:
Scrubs are cheap. And they generally have lots of center tread life left. BUT... race tires take longer to heat up at street speeds and you'll cold tear like crazy running the tire hard if the carcass isn't warm enough. This generally results in race tires being less sticky on the street.

If you wanna run scrubs, then run scrubs. Just expect to change them as often as you change your oil. I would personally be less confident on a set of scrubs but hey, I know a few guys that have been running scrubs for years with no complaints.

Huh? I just fired a set of Pures on my bike for deal's gap (we're here now)........I've never been a fan of the Dragon until yesterday. Usually when I'm here, I try to ride it once. I've done it about 8 times since getting here yesterday, and the Pure's are the only reason.
You should throw a set of Shinko 009's on the 750 Paulo - you may (or may not) be surprised.

Orlin - when I get home, I'll get in touch. You can have all the 'scrubs' you want that are in the basement. I gotta move soon anyway - so "the more the merrier" does not apply. They're yours for the taking.

Lol, I wish I could tag along with you to the Gap, I remember you mentioned you were going... Damn work! Will definitely see you when you come back, and I could definitely help a little with the clearing of the basement, hehe :)

I think you're confusing the terms slicks and scrubs.

Slicks are track only tires without any tread pattern. They isn't a market for used slicks (for street use).

Scrubs are DOT tires with full tread that can be used track or street. There's a market for these because most street riders spend the majority of their time straight up and down wearing the centre of the tire which is barely touched in track use.

No, I'm under the impression most scrubs are slicks. Even for fully threaded scrubs, granted the center of the tire is barely touched, you still gotta turn in the rain/wind at some time. Maybe an off ramp or a local turn.

Like I said, for the most part you will be fine, but if you are caught out in a rain storm, I'd wish I wasn't on scrubs. And matters more to me.

Can someone with lots of experience present some savings numbers here? I imagine someone has done the math already.

New vs Scrubs.

Lets say for 12 trackdays, using 3 sets at $400 per set changed. $1200, how many sets of scrubs would i use in the same time and how much would it cost?

If you buy from the right people, at $200 per set, you can cut that in half.

It's also quite interesting in these threads where people offer steadfast advice on a subject, yet do not even know what equipment is being discussed, let alone having any legitimate experience with the equipment they are offering the advice for.

I'm currently running a BT-16 on the front and BT-16 Pro on the rear. Sometimes in a higher speed on-ramps if I get on it harder at decent lean angle, I'm toying with it on the verge where the rear is just about to lose traction (and sometimes it does). I was thinking that maybe if I was running scrub race tires, I'd be able to give it a bit more juice in those cases...?

The tires you are running are good...the problem is your riding. Booting around on the street then railing through a corner every now and than doesn't allow the compound to heat up to optimal traction temp. You'll save money with scrubs but probably have similar problems.

See that's the thing, the first two weeks I was so impressed with the tires, they felt amazing but then they started giving me a little slide everytime I lean which I like but now a couple of thousand k they feel like *** and I got no confidence on them, maybe its just in my head, what the **** do I know

Glad you having a blast :)
