That's true I hve experienced the same by putting 87grade gas in turbo 2.0L engines and noticed significant change in engine response and turbo lag. Plus 87grade gas gave me less mileage than 91grade.
Now I'm wondering if Esso 93 is AKI. I just assumed it was RON. RON is used moreso in Europe... and AKI in Canada/USA. If Esso 93 is based on the AKI, then that's probably about right for the Duc.
Like others, I use premium in the bike due to the high compression and to avoid ethanol whenever possible. It always feels cheap to fill up compared to my other vehicle so I don't give it much though and automatically go for the premium. But now I may reconsider.
When i got my bike... I was putting in 91 octane and getting around 245 kms/tank......After switching to 87 octane which the manual recommends I'm getting 210 kms/tank.
Nope Nope Nope.
Petrocan has ethanol. If you want your gas tank to swell, go for it.
Otherwise, Shell and Esso premiums are ethanol free.
Friends of mine have owned Multistradas as well -- it seems as though on several different European motorcycle manufacturers' forums they have discovered that the ethanol vapours cause the swelling more so than just the blended gasoline. If you fill up the tank just before you get home, the vapours don't appear to have the same swelling effect. This was tested by a friend of mine in Seattle. The first tank lasted almost a year before needing replacement due to swelling, never filling up before parking etc. The second tank lasted twice as long, after filling the tank before parking again etc.
My KTM RC8r is known to have tank swelling issues, just like the Ducati lineup. So I fill it whenever I get home from a ride, if no shell or esso premium is handy, I'll fill it with the mid grade I keep for my generator etc. (providing the last fill up was non Shell or Esso) Had the bike a year, no swelling issues to date.
AFAIK, Shell and Ultramar are the only ones who advertise 0% ethanol in their 91, when none of the others do. Remember this next time you fill up...especially with Sunoco 94....
