I've been asked today if I can recommend any spots where a M2 holder can practice their skill (emergency starts, stops, downshifting, 8s, uturns...etc)
Being new the my area I could not provide an answer, but I think it would be nice to build a list of areas where new riders can safely and legally practice

Q1: Good/bad idea?
Q2: Can anyone recommend such a place 30-40m radius from Oakville?

Be very very careful right now. With the revised stunt driving legislation applying to private property, nobody is sure what the enforcement picture is going to look like.

Past suggestions were GO parking lots on weekends, parking lots in parks on weekdays, etc. If you are asked to leave by someone with authority, apologize and go. Don't argue.

As far as safe and legal, do you own a parking lot? Signing up for courses is safe and legal but you may not get maximum value out if you are still practicing the basics.

This is yet another one of those things where in an ideal world, there would be a designated place where new riders hone in their skill
I'd rather have M1/M2s practicing in a safe place as opposed on the street where they're a risk to themselves and others

I hear a bunch of people gather at the TTC lot near York U sometimes and practice there.

As recently as June of this year, I was doing drills in the Oakville Place parking lot. There is a lot on the west side of the mall which is somewhat lower and tucked away from views of the main road. It’s a bit of a smaller lot, so only suitable for one or two riders doing drills. We were practicing threshold braking, large right and left corners, figure 8 transitions and tight U-turns.

Security came up to me as we entered the mall parking lot. I politely asked them if I could help a newer rider for a short bit and was told that it would be fine as long as we were done by 9am. We arrived at 7am so it was perfect. This was on a Saturday morning, and I would think Sunday’s would be fine too.

In July we were using some high school parking lots, but I didn’t like them due to too many people coming and going, poor surface conditions and smaller lots.

Oakville GO use to be good on Sat./Sun. No one in that town uses the train on the weekend. We'd lay out cones and run till the cops came by and told us to move along. Might have a visit from the Twitter Whore in the black Ram now if you're running a closed course can, though.

For general street riding I always recommend an industrial area. Near Eglinton / Centennial Park the streets are totally empty in that industrial park and you have left/right/stop signs as well as large (and empty) parking lots to do as you need.

I know. But I’m talking about normal practice in this area. And I would assume (and hope) that doing normal drills in a parking lot doesn’t fall into that category.
