The forum natively doesn't support the like feature. It would be nice if if it did, it's an awesome plugin that works well.
(Hint hint Brian? )Not sure about the TapaTalk app but whatever form of "like" it's using isn't translating through to the forum. I hate apps with a passion for forums, I always use the browser based version.
True enough if you have enough people you know well enough to not turn the ride into a hooligan-fest. As soon as unfamiliar people get involved and/or the number of participants increases the harder that is to accomplish however.

As far as those "reputable riding organizations", I've yet to see any such street-oriented outfit whose rides aren't boring, slow parades on straight roads. There is a local "reputable riding organization" ... I went to one of their meets and one of their rides when I first moved to this area (>20 years ago) and that was it. Never again. I'd rather ride than test whether my cooling fan works.
The best "reputable riding organizations" for sport bike owners are RACE, SOAR, VRRA, and CSBK. But they have limited destinations via limited routes and the schedule is inflexible.
For street riding - Select group, relatively small, noobs filtered out, idiots filtered out, works best. They are out there.

Guess it depends on who's organizing the rides and how creative they are, but it's not been my experience so far.
I was out with our organization 2 weeks ago on an early season ride. 325+ Kilometers, 14 bikes (IIRC), back roads up to Lindsay, 36 through Bobcaygeon, Buckhorn, Burleigh Falls, across northeys bay road (great stretch), down to Havelock, Campbellford, southwest to Warkworth and west towards home. The only straight road section was coming out of Warkworth headed back west.
It was great fun and done safely...no shenanigans. The organization has a strict rule against it actually simply to keep safety the priority...and that's not to say that we didn't enjoy the ride. For those whose idea of fun involves riding in 172 territory, mile long wheelies, bouncing off the rev limiter at stoplights, etc, well, yeah, you're probably not going to enjoy it though.
But it's cool with me. Now I'm looking for sane paced, safe, and enjoyable - as I touched on a few times before, I saw and experienced enough asshattery back in my sportbike days.
Again, not everyone's into the social scene part of that sort of riding, to each their own.

That's three quarters of a kilometer or so, of riders. How do you see that far back? Were they using CB's between the front and back?

All experienced riders, and there's plans in place if we get separated...it's not a big deal, everyone knows the route, there's no pressure to catch up and merge again if the group does get separated... at a few points we were split up (because of turns or busy sections, traffic etc) for periods of time, we all got together again eventually. If someone decides they've had enough they tap out (again, a formal set of hand signals is in place) and nobody worries about them and the rest of the group continues on their merry way.
Typically if the number of interested riders on any planned ride gets too big they are split up into smaller groups...13 was probably about as big as it'd ever get, I've heard anything over 10 and they typically split the groups, but it didn't make sense to have a second group of 3 or 4 bikes when everyone on this particular ride was more than skilled enough to make 13 work.
Again, it was great fun. 350K over about 6 hours (including a variety of stops...gas, lunch, bathroom etc), lots of sun, lots of laughs.
For those who like to ride alone...I get it. I do it. I used to do a LOT of it since group riding was never a good experience for me back then...but now I've found an organization that makes it a pleasure.

Long, long ago we had a rep system setup at GTAM. Theoretically it would help noobs know who to trust. In reality it was useless as attention whores would make posts to get votes. Paul removed it and I have never seen anything here since.
I'm familar with the reputation system, it's a core feature of vBulletin, not a plugin. On a forum I used to admin we experimented with it, and I agree, it ended up being a negative overall.
The "like" feature is much more simplistic though - basically, there's a text link or button that says "Like"...members click it, and the post then shows the number of likes and sometimes the members that liked it. There's a bunch of different plugins that all kinda work the same in the end. There's no tally, there's no competition...if you like a post, you click like, the post collects likes..simple. Kinda like FB more or less.
I always found it nice to be able to express an agreement with a post without the need to quote it and say such, or worse yet, 10 or 20 people doing so.

IIRC a car tried to pass one of those slow trains north of Brampton a few years ago resulting in the cager killing himself and crippling a couple of riders.
A group of less than 6 bikes can work but with a dozen or two trying to keep it as a group how do you do it without running stops and pushing ambers?
Unless the ride has a police escort those "Ride sergeants" have no authority to stop traffic or wave people through stop signs or lights.
Critical mass thinking also enters the scene. Oxymoron. Critical mass and thinking don't usually go together.
