Possible changes to green plate legislation - ride your dirtbike on the road (?)

So it seems this is supposedly in effect as of July 1. Here's the relevant snippet:
"Various changes to regulations under the Highway Traffic Act will:

  • Expand the type of off-road vehicles permitted on roads to include off-road motorcycles, dirt bikes and extreme-terrain vehicles, commonly known as ARGOs. This will allow users to access more trail networks across the province by lifting some of the existing restrictions. These new off-road vehicles will be required to follow most of the same operating rules as existing off-road vehicles permitted on roads, including:
    • G2/M2 licencing minimum
    • Registration and insurance
    • Speed under 50km/h for roads
    • Always riding on the shoulder in the same direction as traffic or, when unavailable, right-most portion of the roadway
      • These changes will provide for increased regulatory flexibility, allow greater municipal choice over operation on municipal roads and transfer regulation-making authority from the Lieutenant Governor in Council to the Minister"

So it would appear if you have a dirt bike thats registered/insured and hold M2/M class licence, you can ride it to the trails now. This makes total sense. If e-bikes, which have none of the aforementioned requirements, can be on public roads, then so should registered/insured dirt bikes.

Only certain roads in Ontario. This info is at the end of the official gov document.
I didn't read it but I'm guessing northern Ontario. Not GTA

IIRC, the changes in the HTA allow municipalities to alter local laws if desired.

For instance:
Following extensive public consultation, Springwater Council passed a by-law at their meeting on March 4 to permit off-road vehicles, as defined in the Highway Traffic Act, on a majority of maintained municipal roads, with a few exceptions. Anyone using an off-road vehicle must adhere to all Highway Traffic Act regulations, including having the proper insurance, vehicle registration and safety equipment.

An ARGO  oh ya, always wanted to drive one of those down the road.

some northern cities/towns have allowed sleds access to PARTS of their outlying town for years.
not so sure about about atv's and dirt bikes.
overall this news sounds pretty good

Yep
This has been law for many years. MANY.

What is to change is side by side quads are now legal.
Traditional quads the passenger sits behind the rider, on a "ARGO" or "side by side" type quad the passenger sits beside the driver.
That's the only change.

lol.
I've been in an argo before
don't know if it would even do 50kmh
noisy as hell and full of vibration - kinda like a mini bulldozer lol
Yeah, that was part of the joke. Top speed is 35 to 45 km/h. I wouldn't be that excited about going even that fast in something like that. In a modern SxS, it is easy to cruise down country roads at 100+.

We had a thing called a Jiger it was the predecessor to the ARGO except with 6 wheels and 2 little 2-stroke Tecumseh motors. my brother and I used to take turns running over each other with it :| That would likely be frowned upon now but it seemed like a great idea at the time.

That was a rare little beasty. Apparently only 300 of them made. Did you have that in Toronto?

Yep, as others have mentioned, this has been status quo in a lot of municipalities for years. As I read it the types of vehicles are just being adjusted to include additional vehicle types.

Doesn't mean dirtbikes are legal in the city AFAIK.

My daughter uses Argos for research work. They have two of the little ones and one of the big 8 wheeled version. They are horrible at anything more than a crawl. But they are awesome at getting into impossible places to do turtle research.

I used to have a Jigger, mine had a 250cc Hirth single (same as my SnoCruiser). It powered a hydraulic pump and had 2 hydraulic drives that were actuated through off a t-handle joystick that drove 5km of chains connected to the wheels. No suspension other than the 3PSI in the tires.

ooooo you had the fancy one lol That was the first really crazy thing my dad bought, he brought it home on the roof of his big ass Cadillac, it looked hilarious.

the cyclops headlight is awesome
The light was about as bright as a BIC lighter. Overall it was a tough little machine. Lots of maintenance, the chains and sprockets lasted about 50 hours. I used to live on the Holland River south of Lake Lake Simcoe, it was an awesome little beast if you could stand it's 20mph top speed.
