Reddit is my guilty pleasure....right up there with GTAM.

Yes, I have a problem.
I used to be on Reddit since 2008 (never posted), just uninstalled the app about 6 months ago. I don't do any other social media ever, so now I'm kinda out of the loop, but I think I have enough sites like hackernews/theregister etc to keep me up to date on most things tech and plenty of other sites and restricted forums for other things.

Coming from the original Digg days, reddit was such a good place that had a decent intellectual feel to it where there was good amount of discourse and what I felt like a genuine conversations. Sometimes in the past three or five years ago, it became like a 4chan shitpost and meme riddle garbage. The amount of people who take themselves so serious has made the platform unbearable and just downright depressing. I'm sure there are still nuggets of gold and other crap, but I'm not gonna sift through any longer. It's like all the silly facebook posters have migrated over and started post grandma's trip to the garden ****, and the ubiquitous "Girls, what trait in a guy you hate the most?" GetThefkOuttaHere!

I'm honestly a little sad by this. I think this happened because the internet became more and more commercialized, easier to access, etc. etc. and as the "normies" came in, it became impossible for the existing users to enforce standards that existed before.

Apparently this is not the first time this phenomenon happened: Eternal September - Wikipedia . I'd be considered part of the generation that caused "Eternal September" lol

I know brotherman, me too. However, I think this is the general ebb and flow of anything, I'm gen x, so I have gone through the infancy of the internet from BBS through dialup to broadband and here. I'm glad that we're having a discussion finally about this and not letting the Zuks of the world to just put **** together cause it can be done. We have measures and control for a reason and I hope that we build on that.

BBS
There's literally DOZENS of us.

Yahoo Groups gang gang!

Personally, I’ll do forums/reddit/twitter. Twitter has a bunch of good stuff that is easy to browse a few minutes at a time.

Haha. What is it with South Korea and Kakaotalk? I did a job there and needed to install it as that was the way the team communicated. It was fine but I didn't bother to keep it installed when I came back.

It is awesome

Kakao is some massive corp in Korea similar to Tencent in China; probably why it's used in Korea so much. They also make good games!

Just like cabling and storage media, I think social media platforms are always going to change dominance and relevance over time.

Nobody uses RS-232 cables anymore. CDs? DVDs? Even USB one day will go the way of the floppy disk.

I've seen it change so rapidly over the years. All these current social media platforms that are top-of-mind today will eventually become as relevant as AOL or Delphi.

Just like I have difficulty teaching my 80-year old mom how to use Facebook, the technologies that we ourselves will not be able to master in our old age hasn't even been invented yet.

If you want to strike gold you need to buy the next one, not the existing one. Lots of choices, most go to zero. Hell, some get scooped by the incumbents and killed (who killed the electric car for the tech age?).

fkn Delphi, lol...god damn that database. AOL chatrooms were the fire A/S/L?

Yep, and sadly, best doesn't always prevail. Otherwise, Betamax would have triumphed over VHS.

I have one of them on my Camry

You need a fleet of Hello Kitties or Totoro in the back please lol

I remember MSN Messenger, ICQ and IRC servers ..

Read the reviews lol. I've played Too; fiancee thought I was cheating on her. That **** managed to emotionally trigger high school me to come out somehow; this is literally how we used to date/pick up girls!

Reminds me of a job I was on 5 years ago or so...some noise monitoring equipment from Japan that had to be setup here on a site.

Equipment comes in, I open it up and ready to load it and configure it only to find that the load disk is a 3.5" floppy....wtf am I supposed to do with this? I haven't seen/used a 3.5" in a decade or more. We got it installed via some other methods, but to this day I chuckle about it.

Do these attract chicks or what's the deal? Genuinely curious.
Same as motorcycles and fast cars attract chicks....you get more attention from other dudes (not that there's anything wrong with that if you're into it).
