Please help me pick a bike...

I used to own a GS500F and sold it about 3 years ago and want to get back into riding.

My M2 is also expiring in July and want to get my M.

I sold that bike because I didn't like all the fairing, and i didn't like the sound of it.. Sounded like a lawnmower.

I like the sound of a Harley, but not sure If I want a cruiser.

I certainly don't want a crotch rocket - don't like the riding position.

I do like the riding position of a dirt bike.

Please can you suggest what bikes I should at?

Get ready for a million suggestions. No rockets, not sure about cruisers leaves things kind of vague. I have a friend who picked up a fz8r. What about one of those? Performance, not aggresive riding position and personally I think they look pretty good.

That's a nice looking bike! How would insurance be on that?

Triumph Bonneville. Looks good, sounds good, comfortable, reasonably priced in used or new market.

A v-twin naked bike or supermoto is what you want

Ducati Monster

Suzuki SV650

Suzuki DRZ400SM
 
Was gonna suggest a monster but I see someone already beat me to the punch. YOu will love a monster dude. They are great bikes.

Also, another option:

Or the bigger Speedy.

Doesn't sound as nice as a V-Twin but doesn't sound like a lawnmower either. Especially with a slip on. Just stay away form inline 2's. They sound like junk.

I've heard outrageous numbers when it comes to insurance (most of my friends with them are 35-45 years old with spotless records.) Is this just bad luck or in general are they hard to get cheap insurance on?

Op not that I can look into a crystal ball and tell you insurance is cheap I know my friend who got that bike is paying around 1k a year and he's older with a spotless record
 
Look into the SV650N <- the naked version of the SV650. The "S" resembles a sport bike, which will probably have the ergo's you don't want.
 
If you like the Monster but want a dirtbike position then I suggest the Duc Hyper. Their new model is coming out shortly. I've had mine new since late '07 and love the thing. 48,xxx klms on her now.
 
If you hate the lawn mower sound, stay away from 2 cylinders. They all, generally, sound like lawnmowers even with after market exhausts.

Someone already mentioned the FZ8/Fazer8. There is also the following:

FZ1/Fazer1 (dunno if we have the naked version here)
CB1000R
B-King

and others that I can't remember off the top of my head.
