Please help me figure this out - $465 Bill from MTO

Wow are we not all Canadian? I can get free health care in Manitoba but I can't call for a fire truck in the next city if I need one without being charged? Wtf is that?

Well the FD is not financed by a province and controlled by a Federal agreement (compared to health care) ... it's on city's tab .... and thus you get billed for it if you need the service in jurisdiction you don't pay your taxes in .... It's not obvious to probably 90% of Canadians, but that is the way it works. I am also sure most people don't like it, because the bill always comes at the least convenient time .... but until financing of the service changes expect to pay ....

The FD should not send the bill to the person, they should send it to the FD that the person pays taxes to.

That's what I would assume. I think we should all be entitled to 1 emergency ride per year.

Somebody's gotta pay for the firefighters to sit around all day and do nothing after all...

Just kidding inferno......

I should hope you are kidding.
When not on a call firefighters will train, wash the vehicles, become excellent at table tennis, and are some of the best cooks I have ever met. The option to exercise is there as well.

Here we go again .. lol ..

He doesnt pay property taxes in the durham region where the crashed occured.

He pays property tax to the city of Toronto.

Carry on with the FD bashing.

Once someone calls 911 to report an issue, and you dont pay taxes in the city etc you get charged for the response.
And there is no circumventing this, by removing your plate or "driving yourself to the hospital" .. both agencies share info.

I don't think that is fully accurate, I live in richmond hill and crashed in richmond hill and still had to pay the FD fee

Since i dont have all the details .. i wont comment.
A few factors come into play. But theres always 3 sides to every story ..

PLEASE tell me what dept this is. I WANT TO WORK THERE!!!!!!

OP should just call and ask.
Secondly, in Toronto, you call emergency services (911) and ask for you to be transported via ambulance, you will get billed and have to pay for it.
The elevator in your building gets stuck, FD comes, owner of the building gets billed.
Only emergency service you don't have to pay a bill for is being arrested sitting in the backseat of a police cruiser. lol
