Please help me figure this out - $465 Bill from MTO

Hi guys,

I had a quick question about a letter that I received today. I crashed my bike on October 1st, 2013. There were no other vehicles involved as I ran into the curb getting on to the 401 ramp. You can quickly glance over the details here if you like. I called 911 and was taken to the hospital but didn't make a claim with my insurance at the time as I felt that it was not needed since the damages to the bike and myself were minimal.

So a few days after the crash I got billed for the ambulance which I paid right away. However, today almost four and half months after the incident I received a bill from MTO which was sent to them by the fire department for a total of $465, which they want me to pay immediately. My question is for those who perhaps have been in similar situations as me; what options do I have? Can I send the bill to my insurance, even though I didn't make a claim in the first place? As a 23 year old full-time student it is incredibly difficult if not impossible for me to hand them over $465 which right now I don't have. But if I don't they have threatened to send collection agencies after me. I am not going to discuss whether the services of the fire department were required or not, because that's not the point of my question here.

I searched the forums before posting this question, and in the two instances I found this topic being discussed the conversation moved from helping the OP figure out what to do to whether this charge was justified or not. Hopefully some of the replies I get will help future members get meaningful answers to this question.

I sincerely thank you for taking the time to reply to this.

I always used to think emergency services were free. Paid for by our taxes. If I recall correctly I remember seeing that being mentioned when I paid my property taxes. It was listed in one of the breakdowns.

I hope you get this resolved

what city was this in?
went through the original thread but didn't see it and what happended with the tow company. its a Toronto bylaw the tow trucks can only charge a certain amount for an accident tow. around $80 or so, cant remeber the exact number, was it in storage along time.

You are SOL FD's have been charging for accident response for a while. You should just pay the bill if you report to insurance your increase in premium will be more than the bill.

Unless you absolutely have to, never ever let your insurance company know you've been in an accident. Keep that record squeaky clean.

Next time, if you can, drive yourself to the hospital (if you must) and avoid all other government services. Police and FD only serve to complicate things.

The fact that they're charging at all is shameful though. Why do we pay property taxes??

I live in Scarborough (Eglinton and VP). I was coming back from GP Bikes in Whitby getting on the 401W near Brock Street and Consumers Dr.

The reason I didn't let my insurance know about the accident is precisely because I wanted to keep my record clean so I don't have to pay higher insurance rate. So do you guys think I should call MTO and try to work out some sort of a monthly payment plan? Because like I said earlier as a full-time university student living by myself I can't afford to pay $465 altogether. I am kinda freaking out here because I don't want to involve insurance and at the same time have this sent to collections. I feel like I am massively getting screwed over here, since on one hand if I get my insurance involved now my future insurance rate will be higher and if I don't get them involved I am out of $465. I'll post the letter for you guys to see in a little while.

Here we go again .. lol ..

He doesnt pay property taxes in the durham region where the crashed occured.

He pays property tax to the city of Toronto.

Carry on with the FD bashing.

Once someone calls 911 to report an issue, and you dont pay taxes in the city etc you get charged for the response.
And there is no circumventing this, by removing your plate or "driving yourself to the hospital" .. both agencies share info.

You live in Toronto, you used 'our' services. That's all I can think of.

* took too long - Inferno jumped in

Like I said in my initial post, I didn't create this thread to bash the fire department or how to "not pay" or "circumvent" this. I am only asking what's the best way to figure this situation out from the point of view of those who may have been in similar situation as me. This might help future members from posting threads like this. I hope that makes sense.

Normally that bill goes to your insurance company, and 90% of you never see it.

Pay it and be done with it. If you cant manage it all in one payment, call the issuing office and offer up some sort of payment structure.

Somebody's gotta pay for the firefighters to sit around all day and do nothing after all...

Just kidding inferno...

OP you crashed, dialed 911, and help was dispatched. Pay the bill and move on with your life.

Not to sound like your father buy if you can't come up with 475 bucks meanwhile you ride a motorcycle you need to rethink your priorities a little.

I know this is a crazy suggestion in today's backwards society but you need to put money away for a rainy day...

Rainy day? Is Valentine's Day a rainy day? My GF wants a $700 parka and $240 Uggs.
How do you expect me to pay for these gifts if I have to save for a rainy day??

:p

Wow are we not all Canadian? I can get free health care in Manitoba but I can't call for a fire truck in the next city if I need one without being charged? Wtf is that?

"fire department for a total of $465" Although it sucks that is cheap. Halton always sends 2-3 trucks. Hundreds of $ per truck on an hourly basis. Last time I tipped my bike over on gravel not in my area. Two people told me they called 911. Told them to cancel picked my bike up drove away.

Simple answer contact the office issuing the letter they will likely accept payments as long as the entire amount is repaid.

The MTO gets the bill from the Oshawa Fire Department, they simply are passing the costs along to you.

As stated do not call your insurance as stated you likely have at least a $500 deductible, (which is more than the $465 that is being billed), so insurance will tell you you have to pay it AND then file a claim, (even though they paid nothing out) and next year your premiums will increase for an AT FAULT accident for the next 6 years or so.

If you lived in Oshawa then the bill would be voided. It happened to me when a woman rear ended my cage my dl hadn't been updated as I had JUST moved 2 days prior. so the Toronto Fire services sent me a bill. I could have passed it along to insurance as the other driver was deemed by insurance 100% at fault. But I emailed a copy of my new lease with my Toronto address and the bill was cancelled as I was a resident.
