please help me choose Triumph or Harley

Thank you for the great comparison...I think "you are riding something a bit special" says a lot about the America...I like the 1200 too.. and like the loudness too... its just that I do not like to draw attention...I am leaning towards the America... saves me some money... and like you said the special factor...got the weekend to mull over it...

Honestly man...they are both great bikes. You'll be more than happy with either of them. Lots of great points...pull the trigger and get riding man! :)

I understand you've got two bikes in your sights. I'd only suggest being patient when it comes to selecting a Sportster. The 09s are fine but, the "sweet spot" for Sportsters is the carbed R model for the 2005 year. Twin disc front brakes, little more power, alloy rims front and back, mid-foot controls, buck horn bars and tach. They can probably be found cheaper than the two bikes you're looking at, with pretty low mileage and like new condition. Next would be newer Nightster models. Most cheaper HD listings are bikes imported from the states but, there is plenty of local bikes to choose from too.

So, don't shed a tear if the Sporty goes off the market. I picked up my 2001 with less than 10k on the odo for $5000 a few years ago. I also happen to like the forward foot controls and drag bar set up on my Custom, being 5'9" and a pound or two north of 200 lbs.

If you pass on the two you're looking at and do end up looking at a used Sporty, ask if the rocker gaskets have been replaced and look for any small oil leaks on the right side of the head below the exhaust outlet of both cylinders. Stock paper gaskets go after a few years and get replaced with better aftermarket stuff.

That's it. I'm out.

Good luck. Let us know what you get and show us some pics.

Cheers.

Both are good bikes, but I've never ridden an American, and the Sportster I road was 18 years ago, so that probably doesn't count. For ease of use, fuel injection is easier than carburetors. Based on my experience with the Triumph and Ducati, the Triumph is probably cooler and will get more conversations going, particularly with the older crowd (not so great if you want to pick up youngsters). From a parts availability and dealer network I have to give the nod to Harley.

Thanks for all your comments guys. I finally got myself a 2010 Speedmaster with upgraded pipes and I love it.
Its got just 400KMS on it and I think I got a good price for it. 63% of a brand new price
I like the look and feel of the speedy better than the America. Also its very easy to ride.

Good choice. I have 2010 Thruxton and I am tempted to look at the speedmaster or a T100. Check out newbonnevilleriders.com. Its a great forum and the guys there are extremely helpful.
