Pipeline hack attack

I couldn't hack into a flashlight but this is interesting. I've worked in refineries and know there aren't a lot of people running around. The valves are controlled by signal from a control room.

What else is open to attacks?

Iranian nuclear centrifuges apparently.

... so some enterprising computer enthusiasts recently found a remotely monitored aquarium thermostat on a casino computer network ... and used it to download the casino's "high roller" file

Like sure, the thermostat NEVER should have had remote access BUT it took some real imagination to pull that off, probably at 64k a transfer

Stuxnet was a piece of art.

Is ransomware technically a hack?
Ransomeware is amateur network security and a bad backup strategy... but you cannot sell a REAL backup till they get hit with something like this.
... but no secondary security on an international energy pipeline?? We're talking "script kiddie" territory here.
******* EMBARRASSING!

No big deal. Who needs a pipeline anyways.

When did filling a plastic bag with gas become a thing? I saw an idiot on the news doing it.

Back in my 4x4 days we called a bumper mounted jerrycan an ignitor. Imagine this thing in a rear ender.

Try to fill your gas tank while sitting on your bike up here and they shut off your pump. Meanwhile in the US, gas stations dont seem to be too concerned about gas in garbage bags.

I was in the UK about 20ish years ago and there was a strike and massive fuel shortages.
I remember there was an article in the paper where people reported a strong gasoline (petrol) smell nearby so they went door to door to evacuate people out of safety.

Turned out one of the neighbours…a taxi driver…had used his bathtub to store the fuel he had managed to get his hands on .

The fuel shortage in the USA is because of the same mentality as the toilet paper shortage a year ago - stupid people hoarding it when they heard there *might* be a shortage.

Apparently had people not been filing garbage bags and 1000l totes (and tupperware, sheesh, some of the pictures that were coming out were real head shakers) there may never have been an actual shortage to begin with, the same as how the TP shortage from last year was artificially induced as well.

People are stupid.

If Line 5 is forced to shut down by a fed. Court, you’ll want to you have plenty of these reusable gas bags to fill up on fuel, it could be the same craziness here...19A04275-3E45-4C9A-A734-0FED81BE9B17.jpeg

I almost want to see that happen as the law of unintended consequences will come back to bite Michigan in the ass in short order apparently.

We went to a rally in Georgia a dozen years ago and they announced that due to a storm in the gulf the pipeline to the southeast would be shut down for a few days. They said if everyone just acted normal there wouldn't be a problem because the storage tanks were full. That lasted about three seconds.

Stations ran out of gas, fist fights over pumps were common. Some stations rationed. We managed to fill up on the way down but skipped a lot of side trips just in case. On the way back we pulled in behind a sedan and the guy was filling a trunk full of jerry cans.
