Pickup Trucks

With the new property coming soon, we're considering getting a pickup truck as we'll actually need something larger than my Sportage to haul what we require for maintenance, animals etc.

We're considering something with a full sized bed as I'll need to handle plywood sheets.

What else should we be on the look out for?

Go!

Possibly a trailer that your current vehicle or future purchase can tow instead of the pickup?

I'm a huge fan of buying a vehicle that meets the MAJORITY of your needs, and then renting / borrowing something that needs to meet the minority of your needs.

As @Baggsy I'd look at a trailer first, because this way you continue with the more fuel efficient vehicle for the majority of your use. This also means less maintenance, less in consumables, and less in excess.

With a trailer...best of both worlds.

However, for me (as a non-truck owner), I'm all for comfort and efficiency. So if the smaller trucks meet the need for a sheet of plywood or other, I'd consider a Maverick, Colorado, and the mid size offerings.

F150 is the best selling truck for a reason, I like them, but wouldn't want the added massive fuel bill. My manager pays $200/week in gas on his simply to commute to and from work.

With the price of trucks now, unless you have excess cash to burn, it's hard to justify for personal use. Also bed height is ridiculous. If you want to pick up fun toys like a lathe or mill, it will be very difficult to get in/out of the bed.

If you want a full size pickup, that is the way to go---for me though, I would consider a trailer instead.

Another option is a Kei Truck if it will be a secondary vehicle. The overall load is of course not as high as a normal pickup and the bed is ~6 feet (still can carry 4X8 with some thinking) but the small size, low cost, 4X4, flat bed (fold down sides) or even dump beds brings other things to the table. I am looking at them now, the down sides are insurance in Ontario REALLY does not like RHD and they can achieve highway speeds but just.

Japan does not like "old" vehicles or high mileage vehicles so there are people importing used ones here once they hit 15 years old.

On that front, Mad Mike has a decent strategy. Old beater truck with CAA pay as you go insurance. You are still maintaining an extra vehicle but a sportage won't tow that much so he made need the extra capacity.

How old are you looking at? Can Hagerty write the policy? I haven't found huge downsides to RHD insurance but I haven't looked for a truck.

My neighbour has an OLD Chevy that his dad passed to him when he died. He's keeping it simply for towing / heavy loads because his Santa Fe won't tow what he wants.

It was free, and just insures the very basis coverage. I already told him I'd buy it when he's selling it as I would use it for the same purposes.

If it was me buying right now...100% I'd go for a Colorado or Maverick. Something about the small trucks I like. Especially if I could get it in hybrid with the 4000lb tow packages.

Thanks guys.
A huge NO for a trailer as I don't want one sitting around when not in use. Also I should have mentioned we'll be getting rid of my wife's car, so a 2nd vehicle makes more sense. I'm fine with used or new and to be fair our mileage low we'll now be 20km from work. Plus I can use it for property clean up etc. where backing up a trailer can be a pain.

Hagerty requires RHD vehicles to be older than 25 years old and of course there are lots of restrictions on use that will not work for me. Other insurance companies just won't do it and many people then end up with facility. I am still looking at some other options if I go this route.

While my usage will be sort of secondary insurance will consider it a primary vehicle due to the ratio of drivers to vehicles in the house. It will be used once or twice per week on average.

I am looking at ones that are closer to 15 years old.

For us, right now it is just a thought. We won't do any serious research until spring 2024. But, I figured get the conversation started and have some fun with it. As we gain an understanding of our requirements our choices will most likely change. To be very easy I can just cross the road to the Ford dealership and grab a F150 that is in the lot. But I enjoy the banter we create in this forum.

There’s a reason F150 is the most popular vehicle in Canada.

RAM trucks are nice…but according to Reddit every RAM driver is automatically an a$$hole.

🤦🏻‍♂️

F150s are one of the most stolen vehicles in Canada.
They are also one of the most popular. Like most stats, to be useful, they need to be divided so you have thefts/1000 vehicles or something similar. That would show highlanders to the moon as they aren't that popular but tons get stolen. I haven't seen theft stats presented this way for Ontario.

Since this thread has already come off the rails. People are paying thousands to install bollards on their driveways. They require a "special key". F me. Those can be picked by a moron in five seconds or less. Now, sort of on track, a gate on the country property provides some security as it keeps dirtbags away so they can't easily scope out potential things to steal.
