Pickup truck help

If it's economy you want, don't bother with the 2010 F150.
Here's my stats:

couple bikes mainly to the track. ocassionally a boat

This is all the "truck" you really need.

Reliable, comfortable, fits 5, decent on gas, extremly versatile, and great carlike handling.

Extra storage in the bed. Swing out, or fold down tailgate.

Its designed to carry bikes to boot with cut outs for the front wheel. Hey, its a Honda, they think of everything!

2008 tacoma was actually my first choice, with the quad cab and 5 1/2 foot bed. However after getting into one and taking it for a test drive i quickly realized this thing is SMALL as hell! Id rather pay a bit more in fuel and get a full size where i don't feel like im in a civic.

I've had two F150s in the past which were good trucks but I bought my 08 Tacoma new and am very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone with similar requirements. The bed is 6' with the gate closed for the access cab model. I am over 6' and a fair sized guy and can't say I ever had issues with it's size it is not cramped. I have gone on a few 14 hour drives with it. The seat is adjustable

If only it wasn't so god damn ugly

You won't realize this from the drivers seat. :)

I have to "connect" with a vehicle before I buy it. My Canyon was a truck I had wanted since the first time I saw one... Loved that truck.

My current one... It's still "meh" to me, I'm just hoping once I throw some mods on it, then I'll feel better about it.

Buy a diesel Jetta and an open trailer for hauling the bikes. Rent something for when you need to tow a boat.

That's what I do, and best decision.

With the a/c running non stop last month, and my aggressive right foot, the worst tank of fuel i got was just over 830km. 55L tank at 1.10/L for diesel.

Towing barely effects the gas mileage either.

Also i would take a tundra or honda. Just a better built truck, and resale is just incredible if you decided to change vehicles in 3 years

Tail gates are easy to replace, but if that is the biggest problem with the tundra than i would be happy. Power train is just fantastic, and it is a toyota so you know the only problem you have to worry about is a tail gate. I have crawled under my share of dodge trucks for me never to buy one. (can't say anything about 2008+ models)

I agree with the Tacoma and F-150 recommendations. If you're cosidering japanese trucks don't overlook the Nissan Titan. It's in need of a refresh but the truck itself got rave reviews when it came out and offered more than the F-150 that year (including power). I also think it looks decent. The only thing I like about the Honda is that it has a trunk in the bed.

You should actually calculate your fuel consumption instead of looking at the little display on the dash. You'd be surprised at the difference.

Just to add ..

I just came back from the US with my truck .. and was getting 10L/100 km. Averaged out 950 kms per tank.
The computer was showing 11.5/12 the entire way.

2nd last in fuel economy.

Both trucks your looking at are thirsty for the fuel.

Look at the F150 with ecoboost, or the Explorer for 2013 with the same engine.

Yup they both suck gas pretty fast, ecoboost is a nice motor...but how long will the turbo's last (bearings)? I am happy with my Sierra getting 750km per 90L tank, before my Dakota 3.9L was getting 400km per 70L tank.

Meh, at this point i have the extended warranty till 180,000 on the truck. By that point itll be long gone, and ill be in something else.

The Dakota was a HUGE pig on fuel. I had one for many years ..

Turbochargers last just as long as the whole vehicle anymore.......People like my dad fear turbos, thinking back to 1982 and Renault Fuego turbochargers that puked almost yearly........That's a myth of the past I am afraid. Even my late 80's turbo dodges with old school T3 Garrett turbos were indestructible. Well over 300,000 kms on all of them with stock turbos, and I had the boost pressure more than doubled from the factory settings, making almost 300 hp. I did religiously use synthetic oil, but otherwise, I thrashed them daily.

Sold my '96 Passat TDI with 462,000 km on the original turbo (Garrett GT15)

388,000 km on my Jetta TDI on the original turbo (BorgWarner BV39)

Both cars were/are daily drivers and also tow my bikes around.

Synthetic oil is a must, K&N air filters are a never, and when towing, I avoid shutting the engine down right away after it has been heavily loaded. They don't like granny style hypermiling that never opens up the control vanes (they seize up if never exercised), but this is not a problem with me driving it. Treat them properly and they generally last a long time.
