Philadelphia gas station owner hires heavily armed guards to protect business

Gas stations are getting dangerous for customers not just the employees, Philadelphia seems to be going down hill quick...

It's a great location for that. You are already out of your car. Often the door is open and the keys are in it. Bad guys can drive to within feet of victim and have multiple clear exit paths. Most people have zero situational awareness.

found the solution. everyone should drive an EV and charges at home.
I haven't been to a gas station since summer ended.

A friend is a CTC store owner, his estimates on ‘inventory shrinkage’ is horrible , and that’s with 4 secret police in the store . That’s 4 payroll people , watching cameras and walking the floor to try and stem theft . We ALL pay for that .
I’m not sure we would ever see armed guards here , but I’m seeing security more all the time . Local jewelry store now has a door buzzer and a guard . The new sports store at the local mall has a big scary guy in a tactical vest .

There is a couple of Loblaws stores that have been using armed Metro Toronto police, on payduty, as security guards
Not everyone supports the idea

personally , I'd like to see guards with better gun handling abilities than most Metro officers , but if it keep grocery prices down, load 'em up.

I'd like to know the qualifications of the armed gas station guards. Are these regular rent a cop people or cop wannabes? If so, god help anyone within range. Trained police officers have terrible accuracy stats when shooting at a perpetrator, with most of the bullets missing and striking whatever is behind the target. Untrained goons with guns might actually be better shots than the cops, but I still wouldn't want to be anywhere near the gunfight.

As for police budgets, the first thing DoFo should have done in June 2018 was to hire a consultant to benchmark all public sector (meaning municipal, provincial, broader public sector, schools etc........ everyone getting a paycheck from tax dollars) employee salaries, benefits and pensions across Canada as well as the numbers of staff per division or sector. And then, to the extent possible, do a comparison with private sector equivalents to see where gaps exist. At least then we'd have a starting point in comparing what people working for government make vs. people in the private sector. Then the challenging part, how do you put in a process over time to reduce public sector compensation to better align with the private sector. DoFo has just found out that his 1% cap is unconstitutional and while he plans to appeal.........he's screwed. Bad plan Doug.

Many, many years ago I went to a new boat shop in the junction (Keele / Dundas), wandered around and bought some stuff for the sailboat. I asked if he would take a cheque and was told yes. I then offered to show some I.D. and he said it wasn't necessary, "Why wouldn't I trust you". The cheque was good but how would he know that?

I went back a couple of weeks later and the door was locked so I had to be buzzed in. They're still around but now on Lakeshore Rd and you have to get buzzed into their parking lot.

Another side effect of petty crime is ecological. A mini SD card in an indestructible unrecyclable plastic package the size of a box of cereal.

Holland Marine , that guy is a weird as the day is long , but they have inventory.

The packaging so you can get it in your pocket is a huge peev of mine .
Ever need a utility knife on short notice , buy the knife , but you need a utility knife to open the package, endless circle of frustration.

Is it the same guy? He'd have to be older than dirt.

Some show did a test on hard to open packages. The hardest one to open was a package that contained a package opener.

I think public sector compensation should be capped by profession at not more than 20% above the Canadian average.

I also think employers should be on a level playing field for decertifying unions at the local level and that Canada should have right to work rights.
