Nothing wrong with a modern 105 groupset for most riders IMO, more than does the job but it may give you some grief on the current bike.

Campy and Shimano are not compatible in many areas and you will hit things like the Shimano rear cassette not fitting on the campy freehub which will result in scope creep as other parts also need to be replaced...

105 is perfect for 99% of the riders I know and as good as anything from 15 years ago.

There is a lot of pedal bikers in here , I'm replacing a 20yr old Bianchi carbon / Campy chorus drivetrain bike. Its been delightful but is becoming vintage Ferrari in maintenence.
Ive sort of narrowed it down to two choices , Cervelo carbon/shimano105/decent wheels $4200ish , Legacy carbon/Shimano ultegra/Carbon wheels 3000ish

so my question is, Cervelo has hydraulic disc brakes , Legacy has rim brakes on carbon wheels. Ive never had discs and its becoming standard everywhere , the bike shop guy says its a never ending debate on disc/rim . For $1200 more is it worth it ? do I have better choices ?

I'm a strickley recreation fitness rider, no one from the tour is calling me. I have zero interest in spending over 5K , or learning bike mecahnics.

The legacy Cervelo, what is the actual year/model, and with the carbon hoops what brand/model?

For years before disk brakes took over, solving the issues with carbon brake tracks was a massive push in the industry, especially wet weather conditions. For time trialing and most road bike races carbon rims were the way to go, cause brake performance is pretty low down the priority list for many. (And yes, emergency braking is hugely important for some, but most racers I know aren’t thinking about that much when all they want is to go fast.)

But just about every group ride, when there’s a little water on the ground, there was always, always the annoying sound of squealing carbon rims. I just wouldn’t want to deal with that for regular riding.

Most of my race wheels have aluminum brake track with carbon fairing, bit of extra weight but so sweet. I have one set of carbon brake track wheels that mostly collects dust in my garage.

I loved cervelo near the beginning. I have no love for what they have become after the investment group bought them and I would not pay any premium for the name.

They kinda lost the plot when they went from building in-house to offshore. Pic of an aluminum internal chain stay brace I made for Kevin for the (then) prototype P3. 2001, IIRC.

Very cool.

I have a 2010 P3, a year or two before they switched to the new more upright P3. I may be biased, but still one of the best looking TT bikes ever made.

Since I know none have you have slept wondering what might happen, I decided to skip the Legend brand bike with carbon rim brakes , and the Cervelo which was very nice , but I'm not a dentist .
Guy at the gym was selling a Colnago AC-R , which is a recreational setup road bike, Shimano 105 and nice wheels , and it says Colnago in huge letters LOL. ( designed in Italy , for what thats worth) at half of what I was about to spend , and it is mint. Spotless. So black beauty came home this morning .

And shimano groupos basically trickle down. So this generations 105 is last generations ultegra, which was the previous generations dura-ace (usually).

In terms of disc vs rim... i wouldn't say it's worth $1200, especially if you don't ride in bad conditions or don't do long descents
It wasnt until these past 2 years or so that we've seen pro road riders did a major switch to disc brakes.

That had more to do with the UCI's often archaic rules than the willingness of the pros to adopt the tech.

They had an argument/fear the disk was going to slice riders open in the peloton.... There are a few that hung on due to "weight and aero" after the UCI said go.

There is a “museum” in Bisbee Arizona , which is actually an old house in what has become a hippie town of artists . Some guy started in the 70s driving around and picking up discarded bikes , trade ins , classified ads . He must have 4-500 Italian road bikes hanging on the walls , pinarello , basso, fiori, colnago, names from small towns where a guy welded up frames in a hut behind the house . It’s a very cool trip if you like that stuff ( I do) .He just thought it was fun , now it’s worth a small bundle.

Bisbee Bicycle Brothel. AZ is a hotbed for OTT bike obsession. Up the road from Brisbee in Tuscon is Fair Wheel Bicycles (bring the VISA and the MC), builders of the infamous Sub 6 (which is ridden daily by it's owner).

When we lived in north AZ we mostly MTN biked since it had high desert , low desert and actual mountains . Enduro heaven . Quite a sub culture out there for cycling, and yeah , you can spend a lot of money on a pedal bike .

Spent a week there. Rode National, Pima-Dynamite, and a few other places. Was supposed to go to Sedona for the day but got sidetracked. Beautiful countryside.

We were in Prescott , 40kms from Sedona if you took the backway through Jerome , which was a terrifying road . I really miss the topography and 10 month motorcycle season , but the exchange rate and never an airline seat sale killed it for us . We may go back when we retire , but sailboat racing in Arizona is very limited.
