Courtesy is a very broad term; so i can say please, thank you, ask how your day is going, kick you a few bucks as a tip. However, because i had the big bad helmet on, i'm actually an elitist loser who has no concern for the safety of people in their work place.

The ‘loser’ is the guy asking for the helmet to come off....not the motorcyclist in my post.
Anyway this won’t get resolved here. I’m happy to agree to disagree on this one.
 
I take my helmet off in a place where money changes hands frequently because I can put myself in the other person's shoes and know that I would feel uncomfortable if someone came in with their face obscured.

Courtesy is more than just saying please and thank you. It's actually being considerate of the other person and what they may be feeling.

The only places where my cards have been compromised has been at gas stations, so I will never use credit or debit to pay for gas. Bit of a pain at stations where you must pre-pay, but it's nice to stretch the legs whether I'm riding or driving.
 
OP is offended because a gas station attendant asks them to remove their helmet and didn’t like the answer that it’s the law?

So the expectation would be the gas station attendant provide a better response when the rider asks why?

Where I might find fault with the gas station attendant is, they control the pump.

If the concern is about theft prevention and the ability of identifying someone stealing fuel, there are two options. Let them pay at the pump and they can wear their helmet without issue.

If they want to fuel up and pay after. Don’t activate the pump. When questioned, explain why they need to remove the helmet. Customer can decide what to do after that. Leave or remove helmet and fuel up.

The rider can get offended the attendant is profiling motorcyclist a thief but, the attendant does have justification.

There is my nickel and won’t ask for it back!

Sorry, but if someone is too lazy, too cool or too proud to take their helmet off in the first place, then chances are that any request will be take as disrespectful.

Since I have a modular helmet most of the time, the compromise of flipping the front up has always worked.

Worst case scenario, the person locks you out of the booth area until you remove it, and calls the police if you leave without paying.

I've never been in a situation where I had to deal with someone wearing a helmet while they conducted business with me.. and probably never will..
I do occasionally have to deal with people that try to converse with me while on their phone.. and it irritates me.. I just ignore them until they get off it...

I imagine I'd do the same with someone wearing a helmet... I'd just ignore them.. until they took it off.

Swiping/info transfer on the debit/credit machine. i've also seen reports of info theft on the pumps itself, they create a 'scanner' which looks just like the slot where you put in your card and it fits over top the real one,.

Expecting someone to remove their helmet when they have cash in hand ready to pay and is clearly no threat to your business whatsoever than you are a total idiot.

What's the difference between wearing a helmet in a gas station or wearing a backpack? What if I'm stealing or have a weapon inside?

If the person is there to steal or rob the place while wearing a motorcycle helmet the clerk asking them to remove it is not going to change the outcome. The robber will leave the helmet on and continue to rob the place.

That being said I would take my helmet off if they asked, this is not something worth fighting about in my opinion.
