parking in the sunlight

As long as it's not made of sugar. It won't melt.

Am I ok to leave my bike parked in the sun all day?
-in terms of gas tank mainly.

I don't use any cover.
Yep. Some bikes with certain windshields can melt your dash cluster (R6 or R1 with double bubble iirc).

OH YEAH

If you look at an unrestored older bike, the main signs of age are that the control cables and other rubber components eventually get bleached out by the sun and the seat vinyl dries out and cracks. Paint can also fade.

Sunlight also accelerates breakdown of the rubber in the tires. Plus you can burn your butt if the seat gets too hot!

Althought it's cumulative, a couple hours a day parked in the sun won't really do this. It really only matters if you plan on keeping your bike in perfect condition for a long time.

Personally, I always look for a shady spot to park, and at home, my bike is always garage kept.

I read an article in Cycle magazine years ago about parking in the sun. Apart from the damage to the bikes paint, rubber and plastics from the UV rays, you will evaporate fuel at a faster rate from the heated tank, I think it stated up to a 1/3 of a tank can be lost over a couple days.

rumour has it this was brand new in the morning when the owner parked it, when he came out of work this was all that was left
:p

Here's the picture I was looking for, R1, Puig windscreen. The light reflected from UNDER the windshield (i.e. the sun was at a low angle, directly to the rear of the motorcycle, i.e. it was parked facing away from the sun).

1. 12 cases
2.Every 10 minutes
3. They take gold coins only
4.Pitch a tent, ohh wait different subject.
5.Every time or it will fall off
6.Dont watch "twilight" with a visor on.
7.yes +10 up front -20 in the rear
8.If you can hear yourself think, its too quiet still.
9.Have it xrayed with your head still in it. Does wonders for you.
10.Ohip covers everything, so crash and use it wisely.

I've seen all of these a thousand times. "Can I leave my bike in the sun?" ... that's a first! hahaha ... no. I wouldn't. your bike is incredibly sensitive to light. also rain. bike should never leave that cover thing posted above. ever.

My 2008 DL650 lives outdoors except for winter storage. The paint, on the right side, is fading a little on the plastics from UV exposure.

Don't do it man! Japanese bikes explode in under 2 hours parked in the sun! Harleys are okay though, they're designed to be parked instead of ridden.
