Panning for gold...for fun

Anyone ever done this? Apparently some faster moving creeks and streams just north of Highway 7 between Sharbot Lake and Madoc are potential placer gold carrying water bodies. Although I know it's in low quantities I'd be looking to do this just for fun plus combine it with a nice ride in the Canadian Shield area.

Can you just rummage around on the banks of creeks and streams for this or is there some legal thing I'm missing?

Actually? I'd be down to do this for **** and giggles.

Someone told me years ago about how they used to clean the machines that dug for gold. It didn't pay well, but with all the gold that they found stuck to it, they were making A LOT of money.

Let me get this right. You know of a specific area that may potentially have gold and you posted the location on a public forum?

Well-played to jc100 if there are piranhas swimming in it or there's some sort of radioactive sludge in the water lol

Hm... Many times I'm sitting on the north end of Madoc on a friday or saturday night with absolutely nothing to do... Wonder if I can pan with my oil drain pan?? (I know you can't, need a properly formed bowl.)

you can pan with a metal pie plate, not tinfoil its too flimsy, and it works ok. The actual gold pans have ribbed sides that allow a proper "swish".

Its an interesting pass time, but there is a reason they use backhoes and 10 ton seperators now. have fun.

These are sites of previously abandoned gold mines and the geological formations in the area are right for gold. The information is common knowledge just by googling "gold, ontario".

No one is going to get rich from doing this but it would be pretty cool to find a few grains or flakes. If nothing else I can say I panned for gold.

I was going to try to head up today but might not have enough time. The next time I was going to go would be first week of september. I'll be riding to Eldorado I think (yes, it exists, look it up) which is just north of Madoc. Next thing to do will be to find access to a gravelly creek if one exists.

You could say you posted about saying you panned for gold.

I've panned for samples but any flecks of gold were not visible, the final product had to be taken to the lab for analysis.
