Paint protection like XPEL on a bike?

Does anyone have any experience using paint protection film on a bike? How does it look and hold up?

My Z900 is coming with matte black paint and after my last experience with matte paint on a bike, I'd like a little bit of protection on the tank.

If I ever find the One True Bike, it would be good to know if there was something to apply on the front/entire tank to prevent/reduce rock chips. Would this or the 3M stuff be appropriate for that?

Was your previous ride matte from the factory or no? What year was it? I’m assuming your Z900 is new? Paint tech has come a long way.

IIRC @GateKeeper used a ceramic coat back a few years, not sure how that would work on matte finish though.

My bike has a combination of both products on it, ceramic coating and Xpel film

body panels have the film, rims are ceramic coated, and panels that don’t have film on them are ceramic coated

until you get real close, and find the edge of the film, you can’t tell it’s on there

ceramic coating can be applied to a matte finish, might bring up a bit of a shine, but each finish is slightly different it’s hard to say for sure

you can also put film on the bike, and then ceramic coat on top of that for even more protection

my bike was done 2018, still looks just as good as the day it was put on

these pictures are from August 2020

It was my 2021 Tenere 700 which has a matte black plastic cover for the tank. It only has like 5,000km and there's several polished spots that stick out and look kinda crappy. The Z900 concerns me even more since you're a lot more jammed into the tanked than on the T7, so I imagine there'll be a lot more rubbing/abrasions.

Will definitely look into a ceramic coat, thanks for the tip.

That looks great! Did you wrap it yourself or take it somewhere?

all the work ( clear coat and ceramic) was done by my son at the shop he works at for car detailing, yes they do bikes as well

they actually have a plotter/cutter that can cut film for the part being done if it’s available, and if not they free cut to suit.

you can do a satin (matte) film as well to protect the matte finished parts

ceramic coating is mostly for ease of cleaning, crap don’t stick to the parts, I typically don’t need a wash mitt, just hose down the bike, use leaf blower to dry, and a micro fibre cloth with 50/50 rubbing alcohol/water mix in spray bottle to finish it off

Don’t know, you just don’t want to use pure alcohol…

the water does the cleaning, the alcohol makes it dry faster, therefore leaving no streaks or water spots, this is most helpful during the ceramic coating application, better said after it’s been applied, dried, and then it’s cleaned, removes any residue, but it’s used also for keeping things clean down the road, as there are no harsh chemicals to strip away the coating.

works great on your cars windows……in and out…lol

Fyi......99% iso in gallon jugs is ~$20 - $25. Industrial cleaning supply stores, or your neighborhood hydroponic shop.
+1 for int / ext windows, car & house.
