Over 25 & Own A Car... What Do You Pay?

Hey Everyone,

This is my first post... Glad to have stumbled on this forum.

I'm just starting out and I'm trying to learn more. I saw the thread asking what people under 25 pay for insurance and I thought that I'd start a thread for those of us who are not on that side of the fence! I'm in my early 30s, I've had my G license for well over a decade, I have an insured car, and no offenses. A bike is just for fun for 6 to 8 months of the year.

I was just curious to know what other 25+, long-term, car-insured drivers pay for their bike insurance.

Thanks!

As for my bike I have an old 81 cb750f and NO ONE will insure it for under $1300 a year or write it with my car. In fact I'm not riding this year because I refuse to pay that much for that bike when people here are insuring faster newer bikes with less experience then me for half that. If there's a broker here that can get me bike insurance for under $1000 let me know.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the responses. I've always owned old beater cars that cost me around $100 a month in insurance. My concern with getting a bike has always been that I can't justify spending more than that on something I won't ride year round. All that said, I'm just starting out so I will likely get a 250cc, which I don't think will be very much.

Thanks again!

$537 a year on a Kawasaki 750cc sport-tourer. 40 years old and married, with 2 years with a full "M" licence and 22 years with a "G" licence in Toronto.

I'm with Duffy/Jevco.

I don't think you do. I pay the same for my 2001 focus now that my insurance went up 10 bucks a month and that's for basic with health index bought back. Im not even riding this year because everyone wants another $1,200 - $1,500 for my 30 year old 750. Yes I have a clean record, I'm 30 and driving/ riding for 13 years now. I must have sucker written in my profile somewhere.

It very much depends on your location. State Farm hates Etobicoke and hates my car (Chrysler 300m), so I can't go to them based on their ridiculous car insurance rates (combined car+bike will be higher than what I'm paying now with TD MM). I a 30, with GM, no tickets/no at-fault accidents, car is ~105/mth, bike is pretty much the same, comprehensive only on the bike - just got an alarm to get full coverage, but $ difference is only ~10-15/mth. You cannot have the bike insurance for 8 monhts, they will all make you have insurance for full year. Oh yeah, bike is 6-yr-old F4i.

if you think they hate Etobicoke, imagine what they think of Scarborough...

It's all about location OP, call around.

26, 1 not-at-fault accident within 10 years

Car with TD, about $3k/year 2010 impreza hatchback =(
Bike with SF, about $1200/year, 2007 GSXR600

Once my car is clear for SF i will move it over for some discount. Should drop by bike to about $800/year

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it wont. SF does not consider a motorcycle a "vehicle" so you wont get a multi vehicle discount. But if you add some BS renters insurance for like $20 a month then you will qualify for multi line discount of 16% or so. It may be worth it if you do the math. I hate SF so I moved my car since I was getting raped with it.

This is incorrect. If you bring your car to State Farm, you will get a very large discount on the bike (about 35-40%) but unfortunately no discount on the car. Home/Tenant and Life Insurance policies will earn you some discounts on the car, but not on the bike.

Statefarm
25 years old
2005 Chrysler 300 (V6)
2004 ZXR-636
Full coverage on car, half on bike (I do have theft)
Clean abstract, Ajax, M2, Top rating
$450 a month ($30 life insurance that I was told lowers my rate about $30 a month, Car is $290)

My agent told me my multi vehicle discount is $100 a month

When I was 24
$720 a month

I'd have to look at my statements to be 100% sure, but if I recall:

Car: 2006 Honda Accord V6 Coupe -- $2400/year (2 million liability, $500 ded, full coverage/all perils).
Bike: 2011 Honda CBR250R ABS -- $1200/year (2 million liability, $500 ded, full coverage/all perils including full MRSP replacement)
Condo: $400-500/year (2 million liability, covers most things that could happen 'silver' policy if I recall).

All the above are with TD MM, as part of the UofT staff plan (in case it is different from just being a UofT student/alumni).

As for demographics, 30 year old male living in Scarborough (McCowan & 401 area), clean record, Full G for years and just got my M2 in April of 2012. The $2 million liability was part of some other option I added that only costs $10 or so a month for all three policies (combined).

As a side note, State Farm would have been cheaper for the bike and condo, but they wanted me to move the car as well, which would have been around $4500 for some insane reason. (even they told me to stick to TD)

30m living in Etobicoke (apparently hated by all insurers)...

Currently:
2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe - $187/month (full coverage) - TD MM
2011 Honda CBR250R - $65/month - SF

New Car:
2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring - $171/month - without full replacement value - shopping around but they're still the lowest...couldn't believe this...ranted in another thread about it :)

As a side not...SF wants $300/month for the Elantra Touring...
