On a visit to Brazil yesterday, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper locked himself in one of the foreign minister's bathrooms, protesting the Brazilian president's decision that toasts and speeches take place after her lunch with Harper, and not during the lunch, as Harper wanted. The prime minister refused to leave the bathroom until the Brazilian president gave in to his demands, theWashington Post reports. The account of what the CBC called "bathroom brinkmanship" came from the Brazilian newspaper Folha, quoting unnamed diplomats who witnessed the events. The Canadian embassy in Brasilia has reportedly denied the story, but the lunch did unquestionably begin 15 minutes late.
There was another tiff between the Canadian and Brazilian teams earlier in the day, when Harper demanded that he speak to the media at the Brazilian Presidential Palance, even though foreign dignitaries are generally hosted at the Foreign Affairs Palace. Brazilian President Dilma Rouseff did not give in to this request, as she did to the later one, and even said there would be no joint news conference, as is typical of such high-profile visits.
After meeting with Rouseff, Harper reportedly walked only a few feet away and gave his own press conference to Brazilian reporters.

wtf?!?!?!? is our country being lead by a 3 year old? can we oust him out now before he comes back?

O. M. G... :sad3: How completely humiliating we have such a completely inept moron 'leading' our country.

It's incredible that anybody buys this nonsense.

If it's even remotely true it's ridiculous behaviour from a Prime Minister. If it's not true, I'm sure Harper's people will be talking libel...

Not only is the original article written by a nobody, he also cites what he claims to be The Washington Post when in reality it's just a blog by another nobody blogger. Then he cites a "CBC" article, written again by a blogger who actually confirms that he has no way to verify the claims AND that the people who intiated the story haven't named their sources. All the while the PMO has already fully denied the story and is entirely unaware of where it originated.

C'mon, lets use some common frickin sense before we spread this utter nonsense.

It's utterly staggering to me that you guys would buy this story for a second. It's staggering that you might for a second believe that the Prime Minister of Canada (or any country) would "lock himself in a bathroom" in a foreign country for any reason whatsoever. The assumption is just.... incredible. Wow.

The funny thing is I can picture Harper doing this lol

As much as I don't like the guy, that story reeks of BS.

Sigh...just cause it's on the internet doesn't mean it's true people...

While I have no doubt there is some serious bad blood between these two politicians (because the two countries have a history of bad trade relations) this would not be the way it would get handled.

Most of the media in this (and other) country(ies) is notoriously left-leaning and many of them - The Toronto Star is a prime example - will do just about anything to discredit a conservative politician. Unamed sources, thinly disguised attacks masquerading as "opinion" pieces to avoid libel, rampant speculation, and outright ******** have replaced thoughful journalism.
The sad part is so many people are willing to believe and propogate this drivel because it reflects their own political views. Ironically, these are the same people who accuse conservative-minded folks of blindly following dogma.

Our PM is a toddler folks; this random Brazilian columnist says so and other random bloggers confirm it.

Translation of original article:

The Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, has caused constraintsin Brazilian diplomacy on Monday, demanding a change in theceremony and only go to the salon for lunch with the President afterRousseff met.

The speeches and toasts are common in this type of event can be both before and after lunch. Dilma prefers it that later, but Harper made sure they were done before the guests start eating at the meeting yesterday. He did not explain why.

He had already angered aides and diplomats at the presidential palace, telling reporters that Canadians speak there, breaking the rule that such interviews always occur in the Foreign Ministry.

As the Brazilian side denied the request, Harper has reached the Foreign Ministry, for lunch, showing bad temper and demanding the reversal of the freebies. Then locked himself in a private Minister Antonio Patriota, while waiting for an answer.

Stunned, Brazilian diplomats did not know what to do if you meet a desire of the Brazilian President or surrendered to the whim of the Canadian visitors.

Only when we have confirmed that he would be met is that Harper went to Brasilia room where the banquet took place, with palm heart salad, guinea hen and "pineapple delight". Toasts are made with wines.

Although the Canadian Embassy to say surprised by this release, confirmed the story with Sheet diplomats who were at lunch and in solidarity with the grief of the ceremonial colleagues to resolve the impasse.

The lunch was scheduled for 13h, and the agenda of the next president was the possession of former Foreign Minister Celso Amorim as new defense minister, who was back in the highlands.

Thanks for the hook, line and sinker lecture but again....I stated that if any of it is even REMOTELY true...he's an embarrassment. I can't stand the man.

I don't doubt for a second that you can't stand him. Only people who hate Harper would be so ready to believe and spread such nonsense. It's juvenile.
