I broke my Collar Bone at the weekend. Its offset 1.5 inches (the piece closest to my neck is 1.5 inches higher than the other) and its overlapping 2 inches.

I went to the fracture clinic at North York yesterday and they said there is nothing they can do, just wear a sling and it will eventually heal like that. I'll always have a bump and it will always be 2 inches shorter.

Does anyone know of a good ortho surgeon that could straighten it out and plate it? Even in the US. I'm in so much pain I'll even pay for it

Thanks in advance

I'll consult with another professional.
Nicely put, that sounds like retarded advice to me

A teammate of my son's hockey team broke his collarbone similarly.
They ended up bracing it with a metal rod so that it healed properly.
Sorry, but I don't know where they went and who the Doctor was.

Sorry I can't remember names, but the osteo surgeon at Humber used to (maybe still is) be the surgeon for the Canadian Olympics athlete arms and legs.
If he hasn't retired yet the guy that ran the Sunnybrook osteo clinic on Wellesley was the best I could find.

When I had what sounds like the same injury, except mine floated for years, every surgeon I talked to convinced me I didn't want it pinned/plated. It is now fused, there is a lump, and until I read this post hadn't thought about it in years.
It only hurts for a couple of days, a week tops. I have broken my collarbone 5 or 6 times.
If you smoke, anything, you MUST quit, at least till the bones heal.

A friend of mine went down hard in lap three of the final race of the motocross season. Broke his collar bone. He was a couple of points short of the championship so he picked up the bike and rode another five laps. Finished second in the race, won the championship. That's commitment... or in my oppinion STUPID.

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine, it healed like that, no problems at all, looks really freaky though

i thionk you need a second opinion.

i'm no expert, but there has to be a better way to deal with it. I get they can't cast you, but this doesnt seem quite right to me

I had a great experience at the scarborough general fracture clinic. I'd give them a shot.

I broke my left collarbone twice. The first time I was told that it would just heal, don't worry, we don't plate or pin the things. It took more than 8 months to finally heal properly, still way out of line.

The second time I had already been to St. Mike's with a racer friend, who had a bad two point collarbone break, and was dealt with by one of the best othropods in the country there. I can't remember the names but there are two doctors, at St. Michael's, who did a study on plating collarbone breaks in the 2000s. Both of them work with the ER there and both are very respected, nationally. Unfortunately my second break wasn't a candidate, being less than a diameter of separation (the first was more like yours), so it just healed naturally. I was told that my first break, from the X-Ray, would definitely have been a candidate.

Try just walking into the St. Mike's ER and see what happens. I got a referral for a couple of days later, with one of the guys I mentioned.

Sounds bogus. Get second opinion. Having said that, I broke my right collarbone at age 10 sling only. Healed perfectly.

edit: mistake, is other side, can feel mis-alignment.

That sounds to me it wasn't a doctor, could have been veterinarian. How they get licence to practice I dunno.

Had a 9 hour surgery at Sunnybrook to repair my clavicle and the rest of my shoulder. Ouch, is right lol

Edit - I shattered the bone and they took hours to get all the pieces picked out.

I have a friend who is a vet and he claims to be better qualified as he hast to deal with many species, not just one :)

Dr Pyper at Joe Brant in Burlington.

I broke mine into 4 pieces with 32mm between the two main parts. He told me it would never heal on it's own and surgery was the best option.

Plated with 9 screws, back on the bike (racing) 5 weeks after surgery.

Ask the doctor at the fracture clinic to refer you to another orthopaedic surgeon for a second opinion on treatment. You can't just got to another doctor without referral.
Try to see if you can get referred to the sports medicine clinic at U of T.

I would advise against going to the US, they are very cavalier with surgery, because it's all about $$$ and you could be looking at $30K-60K assuming nothing goes wrong.

Plates, pins, rods etc. may help, but they also greatly increase risk of more damage and infection.
