options for carrying laptop while commuting?

anybag, just strapped to the back!!!. I have no idea why people here hate to strap things down to the rear seat.?? I hate having a bag on my back.. esp in summer !

Grab your bag, grab some bungys.. you're all set!

I personally now have a tail bag that I can fit what I need into it very easily.

I just use a backpack and I have an extra plastic bag in case it is raining heavy on the way home (although the backpack is water proof I do not trust it...).

I've been carrying the Arc'teryx Blade 21 for 9 years and it is still performing well. No leaks or rips despite almost daily use with heavy laptops and books. I think they've stopped making that exact model, but I'll likely replace it with one of its descendents some day.

Thanks for the replies all, I dont want to wear a backpack because:
1) i think it having to wear something will be slightly taxing
2) i have a long commute
3) being attached to the bike it would always add to the center weight

I like the Icon urban tank back, easy on and off, can hold a helmet off the bike.

Im almost done riding for this year but will definitely consider this option for next spring.

Thanks!

Looks like the OP has already made his decision, but I'll chime in with my better-late-than-never reply to help others who might be reading the thread for ideas.

I've been using the Knox K-Pack for about a year and think it's a great product.

Unlike a general-purpose backpack, this one has been designed with riding in mind:

1) Nothing is left to flap around: all straps have fabric loops to allow for tucking, zippers and covers have velcro tips to prevent any flapping.
2) There is a helmet cover and visor sleeve included.
3) There is an integrated waterproof cover that stores away in the base of the pack. The cover is high visibility, which helps as your visibility to other drivers is limited once the rain starts.

Here is the product page from the manufacturer

(Be sure to click on the Option link to see expanded shots of the accessories I mentioned)

I ordered mine from TopEndz, who I go to for all things Knox.

Thanks,

Honestly, if you can, checkout MEC. They have AMAZING packs. They'll be good in bad weather and always fit the best IMO.

I wouldn't put a laptop in a tank bag unless it had an SSD drive. Those powerful magnets could wreak havoc on the data stored on a magnetic drive. It might mess up credits cards etc if you throw in your wallet carelessly, too.

I thought about that when I first switch to the tank bag
but I have been commuting for 3 months almost every day with the bag and my macbook pro runs fine. =)
The Icon tank bag do have some pretty small magnet, but it is strong enough to hold the bag in place with full load...

I regularly ride between Toronto and Waterloo with a 17" MacBook Pro in a SwissGear backpack. It only bothers me when the backpack is really full (eg, with clothes) or when I have a bag strapped to the seat behind me because the backpack and the bag get in eachother's way. Someday I'll get a bigger bike and some hard luggage :)

Come to think of it, I basically never ride without a backpack, and very rarely without the laptop. I need to ride for fun more often.

get some velcro strips and some double sided tape and tape it to your handlebars so that you can surf the net while you ride. wouldn't be much worse than all the cagers txt'ing on their cell phones all the time.. lol

I like this one, military spec
