Opinion on Gear selection

I haven't ridden in it yet but I just picked up that jacket in black. I like the hybrid idea (although I already have a full leather jacket) I would say boots are something you just need to go try on. You can look all day but until you put your foot in them you won't know what style/brand fits you the best. Helmets are similar. Find what fits you the best and go with it.

I've got the Elsinore boot, I like them. They are comfortable enough to wear around the office all day. I usually wore Doc Martins for 20+ years so I was accustomed to the large boot. I would not want to walk miles in them but they don't hurt or cause me any discomfort around the office, even walking around for extended periods of time. I did walk the whole zoo in them with the kids initially when I first got them to break them in a little. I think they will give me god protection on the bike. My only issue with them for a daily boot is lack of waterproofing. I coated them with some waterproof coating but that only does so much....

Second the gauntlets. Shorties provide zero protection to your wrist.
Mesh/textile is alright, I have one but I wish I bought a leather jacket instead. It breathes well (but perforated leather does too) and with the liner is pretty warm. I'm not a fan of the overall fit though, especially with the armor inserts.

I would never buy a helmet without trying it on first. Same goes for boots.

Slow1/bboySushi: Like I said I'm window shopping and asking for opinions so those are likely not the final choices. I definitely want a bluetooth integrated helmet though especially since I like music and will be getting a GPS unless people want to see a news story about a rider who got lost 3 blocks from his house. :lmao:

Bluetooth for helmet, personally get one that fits. You can always add bluetooth headset like SCALA/Chatterbox after. I added a scala to my helmet, works good and transferable when the helmet wears out.

Ram mount makes some nice steering stem (or handlebar) GPS mounts (or phone mounts if your phone got GPS). You can see mine on my R1 near the end of this video:

My opinion is that if you're going to buy gear, you might as well buy as close as you can get to the most protection available. Leather offers far better protection than mesh, gauntlet's protect better than shorties, and most boots are **** and dont protect your ankle's worth a damn whereas the dainese do.

Thank you N3man for the clarification, I'll have a look at the leather offerings though I was under the impression that the one I selected was leather in the important parts and mesh in the lesser ones. Still, more protection definitely would be better :)

Just got my M1 this morning and signed up with Learning Curves, sadly the closest available date is the 27-28th but what can you do.

I shall look into those dainese.

Dont bother with that helmet.

Spend 2-300$ on a quality helmet (shoei quest @ GP are like 350$)
AGV GP-Tech @ royal are as low as $250
Scorpion 1100 is probably around $300

dont worry about GPS or Music for now, learn to ride proper with some proper gear and add that ***** when your more competent

I still dont ride with music or gps. I find it more entertaining to hear the bike and stuff around me. Less distractions too.

I find the Joe Rocket Alter Ego to be a great jacket. It has 4 removable layers with the base layer being a mesh jacket. The mesh jacket is great for summer and all the layers combined is great for the cold or rain.

I have the 11.0 version, but the 12.0 looks similar except for different color selection.

I highly recommend you walk into a store and try some stuff on before your purchase online.

While I am sure that daily commute would be fine without music and GPS, I am also fairly certain I would both get lost and go insane on a ride to Montreal without GPS and music. That's something I plan to do as soon as I am comfortable enough with the bike.

With the classes a month away I'm wondering if I should buy my gear and bike now or wait till after. I'd be able to practice a bit at the very least at the local mall. I have to buy the gear before the classes anyway.

o0ollo0o: I'm not planning on buying online, Gpbikes in whitby has the baby I want so I figured finance it and the gear in one shot so it's definitely going to be a try before buy, Do you also have the pants that go with the jacket?

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest there's more boots that are protective than dainese. Just a guess.

The biggest difference between boots is ankle protection. Anybody can make a leather boot. Only a few of them actually have ankle protection that works. Grab any boot your thinking of buying and try and bend it horizontally at the ankle. Most will fold over like a wet noodle.

I recommend the Dainese as do a lot of other because the ankle protection works, they are reasonably price(compared to the competition), comfortable as hell, and will last forever.

Other boots to consider with proper ankle protection are Alpinstars SMX-Plus, Supertech R, Daytona Evo, SIDI ST, and Vortice.
