As much as I share some of your distaste for Facebook, in today's online world EVERYONE is monetizing your information in one way or another and all online info falls under one legal jurisdiction or another.... Whether Facebook is taking anything too far is speculation...

I'm not anymore. Tried to delete my account, but apparently my profile is still on there. Someone who I know and has access to FB pulled up my info when it was supposibly gone.

I have grave concerns regarding facebook's practices and how it interacts with various governments and covert organizations. I have never used facebook and I never will. I often discourage people from using it wherever the opportunity arises. However I do not condone illegal activities.

It would make a much bigger impact if massive numbers of people abandoned facebook as the number of registered and active users will translate into what they can command for advertising dollars as well as their stock price if they were to become a public company. (To my knowledge they are still private).

If all of the registered users dropped facebook like a bad blind date then the company would be worth considerably less, which is really what hurts them.

At best facebook's website will experience a few hours of interruption. An organization with deep pockets, teams of IT guys and an abundance of other resources means IF they go down, it won't be for long. Lets not forget that if they really did make that video they may have given up the element of surprise which can be an important advantage to anyone launching any type of attack whether it be cyber or a war against another nation.

If the video is legit then facebook's IT security guys will be working with the FBI in an attempt to track down Anonymous before and during the attack. Unless Anonymous really is that good. Or they're so cocky that even with several months of advance warning, they will still result in them finding and using an exploit to compromise the facebook systems.

In the interim you can bet that facebook is working internally and with 3rd parties to make sure that their systems are as tight as a drum. Facebook won't be doing this for your good but to protect their wallet since that is what they really care about.

I agree, don't be stupid with the information you post on facebook. All of my facebook friends know what my Jeeps look like on the trails and knows what my bike looks like, but that's about it. No birthday (no correct birthday), no work information, no home location (no city)....

Watched their 'Operation Onslaught' video... Doesn't appear to have worked. I've never heard of them before! It seems more like someone's been watching too much 'Fight Club'

Why Nov 11th? Why can't they do it today?

I do think it's funny that we've come so far to eliminate advertising from movies, music, and television, only to freely give a whole lot of personal information to people who's sole purpose is to target us for more advertising.

What's even more funny is that no one will pay for any content or services on the internet, even though they claim they can't live without it, and therefore the only thing that has any real value is the very advertising that everyone hates.

It's a crazy mixed up world.

There are no lies or false information provided in any type of advertising.

Everything you are encouraged to purchase or do is in your best interest.

You would be surprised to know how much advertising is in movies and tv, with out having commercials

Mike Myers parodied product placement in Wayne's World (it's been going on since the 20s. The Marx Brothers sold space in all their movies)..

they need time to hijack cookies and get some admin passwords. all it takes is 1 stupid dba to surf some unencrypted porn website and BAM, ur done

Incorrect. Although preparation would be involved as it would be with any coordinated attack whether it be electronic or otherwise. The date is significant because of Guy Fawkes and the (in)famous plot to bomb the house of Lords on November 5th, 1605. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes#Gunpowder_Plot & http://www.zdnet.com/blog/violetblue/anonymous-vows-destruction-of-facebook-on-guy-fawkes-day/601

Hackers cannot rely entirely on stealing information as you simplistically described. Instead they often exploit known and unknown security holes in unpatched software. On occasion they also use social engineering to glean information from unsuspecting people and use it to obtain more specific info etc. People fall prey to social engineering all the time and it isn't limited to just hacking, recently an inmate ran a million dollar credit card fraud ring from his jail cell using similar methods. http://consumerist.com/2011/08/inma...ard-scam-using-cell-phone-secret-shopper.html

Nearly 100% of the "hacking" you see in TV and movies is so exaggerated that it gives the general public a false sense of how things really work. The movie Swordfish was truly one of the worst films for for distorting public perception of hacking.

This.
Anytime I see a friend that has their full birthdate, I PM them and tell them to AT LEAST remove the year.
A full name (which is what most people use on fb) and a full birth date is all that's needed for basic identity theft.
Scary, ain't it?
