i guess the mandatory winter tires rebate is one step in the right direction as it might act as an incentive to be saferI really do dislike being told what to do by the government. Hate it in fact.
But you can't expect everyone to have the same mind set.
Should everyone have winter tires? Well I'm sure there is the vehicle owner that has all seasons and rarely if ever drives in snow or ice conditions. They may even drive south for the winter. Why put snow tires on?
At the same time, I see pick ups and SUVs with all seasons stuck at the side of the road every snow storm we get.
Big heavy vehicles with AWD and they just drive like the road conditions in July.
I was cursing the winter gods when I installed the winter tires in November. Chewing up valuable tire wear in mild conditions.
But I'm glad I have them on.
Once you run winter tires, you almost never want to run without.
I'm starting to lean toward mandatory use but, it won't prevent the typical mayhem we experience every year.

i already see people with winters year round... theyre easily noticeable in lots with their zig-zaggy tread patterns. We'll likely just end up with people running bald winter tires all year instead of bald all seasons.
And I agree that there are lots of SUVs with no snow tires out there. I know at least two people that think they don't need them because they have AWD or 4x4. My AWD vehicles have all had them.
Just ordered a set today with alloy rims (hate black steel rims) and getting them installed mid-week. Went with Michelin X-Ice Xi3. Also recommend Dunlop WintersSport 3D or 4D...great tires.
