I don't want for Canada to turn into a country like the US, North Korea, Iran, the UK or China. We need to fight this tooth and nail. Can't rely on the SCC to do something about it. On a side-note, I like the new direction that Globe Media has been taking.

I am all for protecting my privacy but there is nothing wrong with this bill. You guys, and the Globe reporter, and the tech reporter on CBC radio this afternoon, should read and understand what this bill is, what it says and what it is for BEFORE you start screaming about the sky falling.
The sky is NOT falling.
This bill gives the police access to about as much information as they could find in a phone book.
Will the police services abuse this?
Not a doubt in my mind they will BUT that is a separate issue entirely that nothing to do with this bill.

And why allow a bill that's so open to abuse? Why should the police be allowed to monitor a law-abiding citizen's online activities just because? Why should I pay for that both as a taxpayer and an ISP customer? If out law enforcement officers have genuine reason to suspect someone of criminal activities, they'll spend the resources on getting an actual warrant.
 
A lot of these old timers in parliament don't know a damn thing about the Internet in the first place. You bring out stuff like this, and all it does is push Child Pornography further underground. Now instead, you have given the authorities permission to track and harass the law abiding civilians and are still not making any head-way on the " real " reason it was adopted. When asked what SOPA was, and how it could impact the Internet in congress, a good portion of the senate were ****in clueless to what the big picture was, but it should be implemented anyway !.
 
I get a bit worried when police can snoop your IP or cell phone ID because they're doing some kind of surveillance under some pretext..protesting a'la G20 etc..and if you happen to be in the area, they pick up your ID, they can compel your cell phone or ISP to disclose who you are, can get a warrant to save and snoop your content based on the criminal activity they were surveilling (that you had no part in..) and now they are fishing you for no reason.

Suppose you're walking down the street and you walk up on a G20 type of protest. Before you can turn around and avoid it, you're arrested by the police and searched. As a result of this search, they find illegal narcotics on your person. Is that a legit search?

Wow.

You seem to miss the point where this bill would force all Internet service providers to surrender the personal information of any Canadian at any time to any "authority" without any court oversight...any chump with a badge could be bored enough to spy on you or I at their leisure, and possibly misplace or misuse the data (with no official tracking of what happens to said data, therefore removing responsibility or onus to maintain certain standards of security) - and that's a fundamental change in the Privacy laws that govern this country. Your points about the possibility that police services may abuse this as a reality is in fact at the VERY ROOT of why the bill in its present format cannot be passed. How do you keep a straight face and even suggest it has nothing to do with this bill??

I'll highlight the major changes for you and others (the below is quoted verbatim from Stopspying.ca):

  • Warrantless - A range of "authorities" will have the ability to access the private information of law-abiding Canadians and our families using wired Internet and mobile devices, without justification.
  • Invasive - The laws leave our personal and financial information less secure and more susceptible to cybercrime.
  • Costly - Internet services providers may be forced to install millions of dollars worth of spying technology and the cost will be passed down to YOU.

Perhaps you should heed your own words and further read and TRULY understand what is being suggested...maybe...before attempting to bash the rest of us?

Personally i'd rather the cops not have access to my financial information just because they feel like snooping, i'd rather not have to pay for them to have the ability either, and i'd like them to be accountable to looking at my information. just takes one dirty cop to clean out your bank account. we hear about dirty cops all the time, let's not give them power they don't need.

Its fascism ! Along with that other bill in the U.S. that allows the military to arrest and detain any citizen for as long as they want for no reason and no trial. Fascism is exactly where its going

Bill C-30, which the Conservatives have named the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act, would require telecommunications service providers to give police a person’s name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address and Internet Protocol address – which identifies a person on a computer – upon request and without a warrant.

Companies would also be forced to adapt their equipment so that authorities could monitor the actions of subscribers. Those authorities would have to obtain a judicial warrant, however, before they could track the mobile-phone movements and online activities of people suspected of committing a crime.

- We scrapped the long form census, it was a slight on the privacy of canadians.
- We want to give warrantless access to law enforcement to all canadians going and coming on the internet (which BTW can say more about a person then the other 2 combined)

It would be laughable if it wasn't so goddamn ****ed...

Call you MP and make an appointment, make them BEND to your schedule. I did... These clowns will only listen to you if it means their selfish ***.
 
If it is such a good thing, then why is every privacy commissioner in the country is saying this goes too far and will not really help with to fight child porn, as for the idea that there is no difference between that and a phone book, when someone calls me up on my phone, I can hang up.
