hi peeps,

is there any issue with this? adverse effects etc etc? just wondering.

also, the new battery that i purchased recently, when i look at the plates inside, they appear to have 'white coating' like sulphation has already taken place. is this normal? i've never bought a bike or any other vehicle battery before.

bought the battery from a reputable dealer on the east side. thanks.

Have you measured the voltage of the new battery? Is it as stated by the manufacturer?

The plates inside the battery should be submerged in liquid, everything above the fluid level will be getting sulfated.

As you rev up the engine the voltage placed on the battery by the alternator increases. If the alternator is working fine then this increase is not too big and there should not be any problems. If the alternator is no good, then the voltage may be too high and the fluid inside the battery may start evaporating. But it would only be the water content of the battery evaporating, the acid itself should stay inside. Therefore you should not have to top up with acid as the necessary concentration should already be present. Instead I recommend you top up with distilled water.

battery should only be topped up with distilled water. If its new why does it need to be topped up already? White coating can be a chemical called sulfation stop thats there to slow sulfation.

interesting. so it could actually be a coating to prevent sulfation. its a yuasa yumicron and it does have that 'stop sulfation' logo on the front.

it's new yes and it doesnt necessarily need a top up. i was just wondering if i can use the old battery's acid to top it up. thanks for the input peeps.
