Ok to Accept Certified Check as Payment?

That's a warning sign that you should be too!!!!!

And Certified cheques CAN be cancelled / reversed. My mother was taken for 5 grand plus charged fees for reversing the transaction. The other party put a stop order on the check just hours after it was issued. That was the day before they gave it to her.
When we tried to file charges the police advised us to walk away as the individual was “connected”. We were told to chalk it up as a life lesson.

some people just are not comfortable pulling out large amounts of cash like that and moving around the city. what about counterfeit bills? i would be more worried about counterfeit bills, than about counterfeit cert cheque.

also, everyone seems to be really paranoid about how people are always ripping people offf and how everything is a forgery...

but... how about a count of how many people have actually been defrauded when selling their bike/car...

I've sold 6 bikes and 7 cars... i have accepted various forms of certified cheques, cash, and bank drafts... not been defrauded once.

The bit on the valid certified check not being guaranteed sounds fishy but if one is truly paranoid go to his bank with him, have him withdraw the $$ in front of you and the teller, leaving the cash on the counter. End of transcaction between him and the bank. He slides the cash to you and you slide it back to the teller and ask for a draft or MO. It's a separate transaction so can't be clawed back. The $$ can't be counterfeit unless the bank was in the habit of issueing it and it never left their sight.

Are banks honest? An ex-teller relates a common scam.

A person writes a check for $300 to obtain merchandise. Then they put a stop payment on the check leaving the merchant unpaid. However on the date the check was written there was only $15 in the account but since the payment was stopped it is a civil matter whereas a NSF can be a criminal matter. Since the bank knew the check was in essence bogus are they not accomplices?

When I sell and the dude pay cash, I always ask him to follow me to the bank, just in case he puts some counterfeit bills.
Certified check is safe. There is good and bad about everything anyway.

So you guys are more worried about fake money, but fake certified checks haven't crossed your mind? Personally I would only accept a certified check within the bank that issued its working hours, so I could call or go in with it, to confirm its real...

Have him go to the bank with you to depo the cheque. I have done this before. If he is not willing to do that, somethings up.

Certified cheques can be countereited. just because he's there when you deposit it, doesn't mean it's a legit cheque. I work for a major bank in commercial banking. Dealing with fraud's is one part of my job.

If he's willing to go to his bank to certify a cheque, why not just get cash? My guess is is he might be concerned about being robbed himself. If that's the case, offer to go with him to HIS bank to certify the cheque, or to purchase a draft.

easy peasy.

My wife works for an insurance company and people copy their claim payout checks on a regular basis. Scam goes like this:

Someone shows up to buy your car and you're happy because they agree to pay your over optimistic price. They are just waiting for an insurance claim check to come in but there's another problem. Someone stole their ID and compromised their bank account and the bank isn't releasing any money until things get straigtened out.

BUT there's another way. They will get the insurance company to make the check out to you and the check doesn't even need to be certified. HOWEVER there is a catch. Your car is selling for $4,000 and the check is for $10,000. All you have to do is write them a check for the $6,000 difference.

You write the check. They cash it immediately. They never come back because they didn't want the car, bike, whatever in the first place. That was the smoke and mirrors. The insurance check comes back as counterfeit and your bank negates the $10,000 deposit. You've been scammed for $6,000.

The new security features on checks make them harder to fake but not impossible. The scams are a very small part of the number of legitimate transactions but if it happens to you the statistical ratios don't mean much.

How many people know what to look for on a check in the way of security features?

just ask for cash all in these new polymer $100 bills. nothing is impossible but who can counterfeit those? no one. and meet inside a police station lol

Someone posted something about the risk of certified cheques being cancelled by the issuer right after being paid with it.. I work in commercial banking for a major bank and deal with this all of the time with my clients.

When we issue a certified cheque, we will not cancell or reimburse the issuer for 90 days from the date certified. After 90 days they can request to be reimbursed, but must first complete a bond on indemnity. The process for being reimburse for a draft is similar, however we will not reimburse until it has been outstanding for 14 days. They must still complete a bond of indemnity.

The bond of indemnity essentially states that the issuer is still liable for the item if it is cashed by the payee.
