Obscene upload usage

Over the past 2 weeks or so my upload usage has gone ballistic. About 75GB in 2 weeks and 10GB aone in the last 2 days. Needless to say I'm uploading nothing that I know about. I have ran 2 different malware detection programs and 2 different virus scans but can't find anything. I've checked my wireless security and it appears to be okay.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Someone's tapped into your connection or your modem is doing silly things.

The former is more common than most people think and the latter is something that neither Bell or Rogers will admit to, but are known to happen. There was a thread not too long ago on here where a member unplugged his modem and he was still incurring data charges.

I would start with things you can control, verify your settings, change/hide your SSID, update your password to something longer/more complex (length is strength) and monitor it for a day or so. Boot your comp in safe mode and see what happens.
If that's shot, completely unplug the modem for a few hours and monitor the usage i.e. did it go up? change? what happened? etc.

That's where I would start.

is your cell and interent providers the same ?

maybe your phone is running something.

as well, a tablet on the same network might be doing things in the background you're not aware of.
Any kids running torrent programs?

Password change. If you have kids, beat them for using a ton of downloading and leaving the program open allowing the uploads :D

Your router should be able to provide you with a list of what is connected to your network. Look for anything that isn't something you own, either by device name or IP address. It may also be able to show you a connection breakdown by device, and detail data usage for each device as well.

Your wife has a web cam ??:agave:

Install Network Meter on all your PC's. Watch the upload bandwidth.

Just captured it on my PC to show ya how it works:

At the bottom of the window, the "total" numbers are since last reboot, the "current" numbers are current totals for the month. Green is upload, yellow is download. You can adjust the monthly resets to sync with your ISP's billing cycle.

Also run combofix on your computers, to look for rootkits. Normal virus and malware scans won't detect them.

What router are you using? If you can flash it with DD-WRT it has advanced bandwidth logging on a per computer/phone/tablet basis, really great for seeing WTF is going on with your data usage!! I had to do this to figure out WTF was going on with my network, you wouldn't believe what it was, MY CANON T2i DSLR CAMERA!! lol. I had one of those EyeFi wireless SD cards in it, had cloud sync turned on, and it kept trying to upload a 700mb video that would fail, and it would just continuously retry to upload it over and over!!! yikes!

Are you with Rogers? If they are dinging you with overage charges you can upgrade to unlimited for $10 more per month.

Good luck.

Pay someone that knows what they're doing to figure out the problem, put it in terms you can understand, and work with you on a solution.

lol, no hacks caused those numbers. Sharing is Caring ;)

Let's here about this extra $10 for unlimited. Customer retention department ?
Nope, not retentions. Just call, ask about the $10 unlimited option. That's the ONLY way to get it. I was paying hundreds more each month due to overages, called, *******, they credited my bill a few $, didn't say ANYTHING about the $10 unlimited option! My modem caught on fire and they "upgraded" me to the Hiltron modem (OMFG what a piece of garbage. Torrents super slow, my web servers no workie cause you can't forward port 80 in it, etc. I run DD-WRT x86 edition on dual core box with 2 x gigabit now, hiltron in bridge mode). I posted on the Rogers forum about support for the Hiltron router/modem and made the comment "my torrents are going so slow now I won't even get dinged overage charges this month" and that's when someone told me about the $10 option!!! I called, added it, no questions asked, they even back dated it two months and refunded me $168!!! I usually do 3TB to 5TB a month now so obviously it's legit unlimited :D

WTF are you downloading to hit 3TB-5TB every month? lol

Not that hard to hit really, just get everything in 720 or 1080p, and giv'r.

Remember when 100 Megabytes was a LOT of space?

yeah. Zettabytes for everyone.

It's mostly uploading, not downloading. I have five 1080p security cameras here that are used to demo CCTV security systems for my work, and they pull huge bandwidth. When you download from newsgroups you get the full speed of your internet connection (300mbps in my case), so I can download a bluray rip movie in under 3 minutes, so the bandwidth totals get up there quick ;)

Thanks to everyone for suggestions. My kids don't live at home. I'd already disabled wifi on my phones. No tablets. I'd already changed password. And i've been monitering usage. Seems to be back to where it should be.

Rogers told me to call them back about getting my overage creidted back to my account. I'll keep everyone posted as to how that goes!!

Rogers is good that way, they will give you a one time credit of overages.
