Oakville Author beaten for insulting Islam.

I've had many muslim friends, but never any extremist friends. Great ppl don't get me wrong. But what happened to our freedom of speech? In a supposingly free society?
We let people move in to the country that dont care to respect the Canadian culture. We were a society of politeness and patience towards each other. Not so much any more since the people that are lucky to be invited to the country decide to come here and act like they are back home and complain about us carrying on our traditions out in the open. Not surprised to see this happen but then Ive also seen another side to the world that most of you never will so my opinion will be different than all the expert CNN viewers. Not saying there are no good people in that belief system or that just because you are Islamic that you are a terrorist. I just wish people would relax with this whole god thing. We are all the same I see no point in fighting over what fairy tale you believe in.

All religious believes are correct, its only the extremists that are causing the problems....

Beating up the author just proved the point of his book, way to go.

This post better be directed to the writer of the book.

Actually, extremists of all religions will go out and seek retribution against those they think to be foes of their religion. The JDL was particularly notorious in the 80's for this and was listed as a domestic terrorist organization in the US. Just this year the a CBC commentator denounced the local chapter of the JDL as a terrorist organization too, though the CBC subsequently retracted that statement and apologized.

Certain fundamentalist Jewish groups in Israel are just as extreme (beatings, bombings, etc) against those they believe to be Christian missionaries as are certain fundamentalist groups in Egypt against those they see as being Christian missionaries in Egypt. Others have published books approved by high-profile government-paid rabbis that argue when it is ok to kill gentiles. Apparently according to these rabbis, it's ok to kill even a gentile baby if that baby might grow up to be a threat to Jews.

Go back and look at IRA vs the Orange Order and the UDA in Northern Ireland. Sure, some of that was due to the politics of self-determination on either side, but the religious component was the driving force behind most of the terrorism and violence there.

The latest terrorist attack in Norway was a Christian nutjob trying to make a statement against Islamic inroads in what should be historically Christian Norway. I guess he forgot Norway's ancient pagan heritage of the Norse.

In particular, Christian groups have been quite willing to use terrorism and violence against what they see as the devil's abortion clinics or other threats against God in the US. Many of the patriot militia groups in the US are very heavily Christian-driven.

Hindus have their terrorist groups, as do Sikhs. In any group large enough, there will be enough nutjobs to gain the notice of the public.

Islam is arguably the fastest growing religion these days while practising Christians are in decline, and that makes them a threat to those who care about the Christina religion. The result is plenty of incentive to view Islam as threat to "our way of life" and to write about Islam as being either a serious threat, or an abomination, or both. The logical follow-on is for the more extreme Muslims to react accordingly. Given that there are a lot of Muslims in the world, it only takes a tiny percentage of that large and growing body to paint the rest as being something they are not.

+1 to all of this. Speaking as a Hindu, people need to stop generalizing and singling out Muslims. Every religion has its extremists, including Hindus, Christians and Buddhists. No one is innocent. Most people following these religions are nice and peaceful people. But everyone has their bad apples that taint the religion by being violent in religion's name. This is not the way it is supposed to be.

Freedom of speech does not imply freedom from consequence. Unfortunately, sometimes consequences come in the form of criminals.

Take a look at the "product description" of this book, on the Amazon website: http://www.amazon.com/Wake-Up-Call-Gabrielle-Dipersico/dp/1460932374

Well reading more about his bio and his book, he did deserve a beating. But sometimes I go thru my day and want to hit several people and can't do it because I know that is not the right thing.

But 2 wrongs don't make a right, so I'm gonna have to put the blame on both of them.

They both need a public medieval floggin'

Except for the rampant xenophobia that is.
Sorry to tell you, but I'm not unreasonably biased against other cultures. All I'm saying is when you enter this country leave your bs of your home country at the door. They left to come here to live a good life away from all the crap that happens all over the world so don't bring it with you. I met all kinds of people on my tour since I interacted directly with the public. Most were just normal people some would risk being seen and thank us and a couple gave us information that ended up with them being executed for us to find on the next patrol. But I've seen the horrible side. Women and kids being burned alive, beaten, boys and girls brutally rapped and a few attempts to kill me and my buddies. So to see any kind of similar actions here in the country that we should be safe to voice our opinions in bothers me. I have friends from all over the place different cultures and religions. I come by my opinions through first hand experience and not what the media tells me to think. Been there and done that thank you.

"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

The author is clearly someone who is ignorant and hateful. However, as a country we have to defend her right to spew her ignorance (within hate speech limits).

Democracy is based, fundamentally, on a marketplace of ideas, and the notion that out of many sources of information, truth will emerge. The fact that many reasonable people are repulsed by her writing says, in fact, good things about our society and its healthy on a whole for us to encounter opinions and people that we do not disagree with.

The use of violence to suppress speech is one of the most vile and despicable forms of control against a group of people. That simply can not be tolerated in a free and democractic society.

Absolutely right; two wrongs don't make a right. I just have some difficulty in working up to giving a damn, when someone who refers to himself in such terms gets the attention he craves, but not of the type that he wants.

What in the world does this have to do with this issue?

true!

That book seem to be written in a very comical tone. Its not very hard to ignore

You suggested I'm xenophobic when I'm just being realistic with the experience to back it up.

You're not xenophobic as long as you recognize that all cultures have violent, sometimes religiously backward people who do things that are not acceptable in this country..and that would include good'ole white boys who beat their kids and wives..

You must be a Native American. I am humbled to be in your country. Thank you for letting me be here.

I first felt bad about what I had read. And then after reading the section that turbodish posted I don't even care. There wasn't even a ****-hair of accuracy in that clip from the book. So obviously the only goal of the author was to hate/slander. What goes around comes around.

I'm not status holding, but I do have family history a couple generations ago, but I consider myself to be from the early european wave of "canadians" my family has been here for a few generations now, so I just consider myself to be 100% Canadian, this is the only place that has ever been home, the only place I feel a connection to.

And yeah, that clip that we read was total slander, and I didn't agree in any way with the way the points were being brought across.

I can't believe some of the attitudes in this thread basically justifying violence as a response to opinion.

The author, under freedom of speech, is allowed to write what he did unless it incites hate. If Muslims feel his literature is hate literature, then attack him through the proper channels under those terms, not with violence. There is no freedom from being offended. If you simply don't like what someone says, then don't read it - and definitely don't promote it by making it a news story.

For those in this thread who justify violence as a proper response to being offended -- careful what you wish for -- one day your opinion might offend someone who will also resort to violence. Or perhaps you want to live in a society where one has to walk on pins and needles out of fear of offending someone?
