India's TVS Motor snaps up British brand Norton Motorcycles

India's third-largest motorbike manufacturer TVS Motor <TVSM.NS> has sealed a $20 million deal to buy British brand Norton Motorcycles as part of a distressed sale.

The British brands are seen as prestige items in India just like anywhere else. Nobody should deny that Norton, Triumph and Royal Enfield all had deep-rooted followings the world over being 100 year old marques. A lot of that brand value exists, as can be seen by the rapid rise of Triumph sales the world over. All that was really missing from British motorcycles is competent management and adequate investment. If the Indians can make a go of it more power to them.
